I can't wait until it becomes common knowledge that NO...heat does not destroy psilocybin or psilocin.  At least not any amount of heat that a normal person would be applying to it in anyway.  Where's my proof?  Right here:

http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms_chemistry.shtml

According to that handy little chart, psilocybin's melting point is 185 degrees celcius at the minimum, and psilocin's is 173.  That's 365 and 343 degrees fahrenheit, respectively.  Unless you put them in your oven at that temperature, they will not deteriorate due to heat.  Perhaps due to exposure to oxygen or light, but not heat.  Why do you think tea works?  If they broke down because of heat, tea would not be a viable method of consumption in anyway.  Hope this answered your question.

How much heat? Dehydrator? Or oven?

Also, scroll to the bottom of the page, the search engine has something for you.

Once again, the search engine has changed opinions, and now offers less-useful links. What's that about?

Most people think heat destroys psilocybin, but those people have never put active mushrooms on a pizza.

It would be interesting to cook mushrooms for a day or 2 in a crock pot and see if it changes the experience at all.

My guess is that psilocybin is quite stable, but heat may affect the psilocin and other alkaloids.

Well from my experience with a heated dehydrator it did effect them.  I dosed 5g's and barely got a 2g effect.  When I didn't use the dehydrator with the same mushrooms from the same cakes, my trips were much much harder.  Just my 2 cents.

I would honestly just use the fan, it works and there is 0% chance they can be harmed even if the heat CAN do something.

I know for a fact that boiling alcohol isn't too hot. A dehydrator at 110 or 120F is just fine, I promise.

i like to butterfly a few 3-4 inch fat mushrooms-just cut'em vertically
without seperating the two halves, and simmer in a little butter, not
much, for like 2 or 3 mins on each side. let them brown a bit then toss
them on a plate to cool. IME this delivers the quality of fresh
mushrooms while applying a fantastic taste for mushroom lovers of any
kind.

Heated dehydrator is worse for em than hot water. You blow a steady stream of heated oxygen across it, you're gonna oxidize it a lot more than heating it in solution. I also think it's more stable in solution w/ cranberry juice and or tea than it is in hot water alone.

I can't prove it. But this is what I believe from experience.

Heat kills... BUT the 'good stuff' is not ALIVE.

Still, heat *can* reduce potency... depending on how much heat is used, and for how long your shrooms are heated.

However, heat's effect on potency seems to be negligible in short bursts... a good tea extraction *may* even be more potent than simple digestion of fruit bodies because you get all the 'good stuff' quickly w/o the need to digest. With tea, the 'good stuff' goes right to your brain.

By the time you've fully digested a fruit body, your tolerance to the 'good stuff' will have increased to a point where you may not even see the effects of the rest of the 'good stuff' in your belly.

It can take a while to fan dry. As long as MOST of the water is gone, they'll be fine under the fan for several more days. You can heat dry, or use desiccant.

Good luck.

But stick the bag in the fridge. I think they will finish drying like that. I have read that here a few times anyway. Can anyone back me up on this?

Throw them in the oven on low and keep the door cracked open,  that much heat does nothing but dry them.

Hah, well I can say that these mushrooms are not invincible. For instance, last week I harvested 3 ounces from one of my monotubs. I was going on vacation the next day so I had to work work work to get everything done the night before. I had run out of room in my dehydrators and my g/f was giving me the hassle to go out to eat. I decided to try my hand at oven drying them. Well, I forgot to open the oven door....2 hours later when I got home the house smelled like mushrooms all over. Looked in the over, and yup, 3 ounces of slow cooked shrooms. Black sliminess was more like it. So, I put them in the dehydrator over night. Next day tried some out on a friend (4 grams). She felt very little, except maybe the anxiousness of a trip coming on. Sooo don't cook your shrooms, they will lose potency.
