New monotub grow with casing: Ready to introduce fruiting? (with pics)
    #10978534 - 09/01/09 10:30 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

18-gal mono, WBS to coir/coffee/verm, MGMC plus a little verm to case. Argentina strain, P cubes.

This is what it looked like before casing:

Then I cased with 1/4 inch of MGMC with a little vermiculite. First time working with monotub casings. About 5 days later, this is what the casing looks like:

It has looked pretty much like that for about 2.5 days. I thought maybe it was too dry last night so I misted it a little.

Is this enough colonization on the casing layer to introduce fruiting conditions, ie. light, rh, and fae changes?

(Also let me know if something doesn't look right, I'm still new, especially to casings)

You have to let it achieve 100% colonization before fruiting.

Your "casing" should NOT have nutrients. The mycelium will use the casing as a food source now. You kind of screwed yourself. You are going to have to let it colonize.

If you want to use a casing, make sure you know why you want to use a casing. A casing is a NON-nutritive micro climate.

If you use a casing material that has NO nutrients, you will induce fruiting immediately after casing the substrate.

I think what you want to do here is patch the mycelium that popped through (2.5 days ago) incubate it for another 2 days and stick it in fruiting conditions.  That's what I read people doing most often with cased tubs/trays.

And I'm pretty sure you want to mist a lot more with casing than you would without.  I remember reading that somewhere here.

What? I used pasteurized Miracle Gro Moisture Control and vermiculite to case. Lots of people use that, I've seen several successful grows with it or I wouldn't have used it. I used it instead of 50/50 because I had the wrong kind of moss.

Also I've heard that if you let the casing layer colonize too much before introducing fruiting conditions then you will have overlay.

Perhaps you are right and I was confused about something. Could I get another opinion?

IMO you should have already fruited.  It sounded like the second poster wasn't sure what you were asking because his post sounds like an off topic lecture.  Patch those spots with more casing and fruit it IMO........................

Have some mixed opinions here. Should I patch and fruit or should I let the whole thing colonize and then fruit?

**UPDATE**

So.. I did fruit the tub. I moved it to an area with less stale air, I gave it light in 12 hour intervals from a daylight lightbulb, make the polyfil packing less dense, and lowered the temperature in my house to around 78F.

It's been 5 days since I've posted and.. it's not really doing anything. Still just a few patchy areas of myc. The casing layer is slightly moist. If I didn't patch I believe it would look exactly like the 2nd picture in my original post. No pinning whatsoever.

Fruiting appears to have been a mistake. Is there a way I can salvage this? Should I cover the holes with tape, put it back in the closet, cover the light-hole in the lid?

Please don't just call me an idiot, I know I've made some mistakes so far, but I'm learning and that's what this is all about, right? I wont be casing in the future unless it is completely non-nutritive, as I have learned, and I just want to know what I can do at this point to get something out of this tub.

If it smells ok, i'd just leave it as is and wait.

It smells fine, like dirt and coffee.

You're gonna need to just wait. Depending on the thickness of the casing you could have 5 or more days yet. The myc probably hadn't even consolidated yet when you cased it. No sense in trying to push it back into a vegetative state tho. Since you already induced fruiting, you should stand firm and wait it out. Stop patching/misting and let it do its thing.

Someone else chime in here.

Thank you so much for replying! I really want this to work and I've just been pacing around the house worrying about it. Thanks!  :heartpump:
