Coco Coir jars pinning... should I birth?
    #11005868 - 09/05/09 08:02 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I have some PF Tek jars that I used Coco Coir as a substitute for vermiculite with success so far. A few of the jars aren't fully colonized but have about 4 pins that are 1/2 centimeter big... I'de say the jars are 95% colonized but should I wait for the last 5% or just birth asap?

I've heard mixed answer in the search so sry if its a noob question.

PS What they say about Coco Coir is 100% correct it takes much longer to colonize. I have some vermiculite cakes I start a week later (after the verm came in) and they have caught up with the Coco Coir cakes (some of which have stalled due to density).

I'd say wait to "birth" if your using them as cakes.. They say to wait even a few days after 100%, to just guarantee completed growth. If your anxious, take them out, cut out the uncolonized coco/mix (your 5%) and follow a casing/tub procedure.. Should birth the one with pins though, is it 100%?

pinning usually only happens after full colinisation. Might hve een those spots cant be colinised for some reason. contamination for example, or it dried out maybe its compact
