PH question
    #1093363 - 11/28/02 07:32 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

I've read that it's dificult to get the ph right with hydrated lime and I don't think I have the right tools to test the ph but might.... I have an old chemistry set that has 6 different indicator solutions in it, the book only has activities where the solutions change color and you know if it's an acid or a base. The six solutions it comes with are bromocresol green, congo red, crystal violet, licorice root, neutral red, and phenol red. Anyone know of a way I can use any of these tro find out the PH of a casing? I also have a fresh/salt water fish tank test kit that will test the PH of fresh water but only between 6.0 and 7.6, so that seemed a little less promising than the old chemistry kit...

Each of your indicators changes color at a different pH. Using them you will be able to get a rough estimate of the pH. If you have a bit of lab equipment, you can do a titration to find out the exact pH using an indicator and a buffer. I would just get some pH test strips and use them instead. They are cheap and easy to use.

I've read that you can simply stick them in your casing once it's completly hydrated, but that can put stains on the strips so you can't accuratly tell what the pH is.
