Abhorts or Bad Fruits or What?
    #11006518 - 09/05/09 10:10 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

This is my second flush, and it doesn't seem to be doing better than the 1st.  The pins started out great but the stipes began to turn brown as they got bigger.  I was a little concerned but decided to keep monitoring.

Now most of the fruits are turning black (and no veils have broken, so I seriously doubt it has anything to do with spores).  The blackening seems to be the flesh of the stipes.

My main concern is if they are still considered safe for consumption.

By the way...  the black areas are darker than they appear in the photo.

I thought aborts were identified only by black caps.  None of the caps are black on this cake.  However, the veil doesn't seem to want to break on that big one yet, and I don't know if it ever will.

I would say aborts? look at it as them trying to pop and the longer they go without opening it is causing pressure or severe bruising so the longer they stay growing the more pressure its causing itself,on the inside. Like a balloon that wont pop just turn more and more black and stretching effecting the outside.(bruising) That's just from me basically telling you what I think is going on from a over analytical common sense break down. But I would say whats the humidity at? Do you light 12 hours off twelve hours? How do you maintain them on a daily basis other than just monitoring?
Sorry i babbled. I just tasted some Z-Strains look into them very potent.

I have seen aborts without black caps growing them on rye berries.

Well, I have a very simple set up, just for experimental purposes.  The FC is actually a CD spindle with the center pole removed.  I put micropore tape under the bottom, where the hole was left from the pole and I made some holes around the bottom of the spindle case for gas exchange.  The cake sits on a jar lid, which sits on perlite, which sits in a cut-out 2 liter bottom.

They don't receive a consistent light cycle, but they get at least 12 hours of light (flourescent).  My first flush dried the cake out pretty good, so I figured I would mist every time I fanned, which is about 4 times a day.

I was misting the spindle walls as well as the cake, but I stopped misting the walls as of today because I read somewhere that it is useless.  I never mist the cake directly, only above it at an angle, but droplets do hit the fruits (the droplets do disappear fairly quick).

I didn't put a hygrometer in there for lack of space, but the 1st flush seemed to do well without any means of reading the humidity.

As long as they are not contaminated then you can eat them.

They look fine ... they just don't look fully developed yet.

Spraying the walls works if its enclosed then it runs down the sides and hydrates perlite in case of any drying in turn the water bouncing off the sides gives everything else a small taste of that water without soaking. The first flush dried your cake pretty bad that's what sounds to me like your problem giving the skin to your mushies a little bit more of a tighter fit so the veil wont burst. I would say as soon as you see that blackish blue appear. pick them they should be fine. When i get a few i pick them right away and some thing nice will usually appear in that same spot. But your maintenance is fine i would recommend a hydrometer they sell them very cheap the size of a quarter. It might not be good but it will give you a ball park figure.

What he said,

they are aborts.

and their safe,

your cake is very small so imagine all that water that made the last batch is now missing, and misting isn't going to get it back, so....pick what you can, and soak it for 24 hours.

You may want to put some more verm on it, then mist the verm over a couple hours to wet it down.

If there's food in that cake you still have a chance at another flush

Those fruits look pretty wet.  That discoloration is bruising, I would say.  Be careful when you are misting not to spray the fruits.

And misting the walls of your FC is a beneficial thing.  Just don't mist of there's already moisture there.  Just when the walls look dry, which means the humidity has dropped.
