The top section above the first node WILL die off,as it has no use.What concerns me is the total lack of leaves (From what I can se from the pic) Don't give up on it yet,esp. if there are small leaves at the nodes. The top part dying means nothing. Be on the look out for mites and whiteflies,since your plant is weak they could easily kill it off. Good Luck.
From what I see, it appears as if there are absolutely no new shoots. And even if there were I doubt they'd grow. On top of that your soil is very dry, so if there was some infinitesimal chance that it would, the soil is dry as a bone and i'm sure there isn't enough humidity to support the new shoots. Time to rip that sucker out, wash the pot and re-use it for something else.
I could elaborate more on why it's turning black and why the new shoots wouldn't grow, but take my word for it. It's done.
