DUB TUB
    #11004590 - 09/05/09 02:26 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

(deleted original, change of plan, updated new one)

8 steps
B+ plan easy as cake

1. knock up jar pf cake style, B+,
2. once fully colonized let sit for a week, letsoak cakes for 24 hours, dunk in water and roll in verm,
3. fill about an 3 inchs of perlite in 8 qt.
4. place aluminum square below cake to barrier between perlite and cake
5. place in 8qt mini shot gun, polly filled holes so mushrooms breath.
6. hide small tub in LARGE speakers.
7. fan blowing against wall behind speakers, indirect air flow
8. give at least 9 hours of light, mist, fan, light, eventually fruit.

Hmmmm, ok here goes:

1. Yes, SPENT coffee grounds, starbucks will hook you up if you ask them!

2. Fastest, and easiest place to get it would be your local pet store.  Its packaged in bricks called bed-a-beast.  Other brands will work, just read the package, it should be pure coconut.

3. No, do not sterilize it, pasteurize it like this.

4. With WBS, I would because it tends to dry out more, and not give good flushes when fruited strait.  The coir adds much needed moisture.  With cakes, you could just fruit them in a shotgun FC.

5. You could just fruit the cake as is, in a shotgun.  If you crumble, I would spawn to bulk.

The speakers that can be used would be the tall ones large ones.  That way there's air travel above it, not side to side.

A 6QT DUB TUB PLAN:
1. knock wbs bag up or knock up cake jar, either.
2. once colonized pasturize coffee grounds (nitrogen), coir (pure coconut from pet store) (nutrients), and verm (holds moisture).
3. Put pot on stove and pour in 1 gallon water.
4. Turn that baby on high, get the temp up to 170F.  A long stem thermometer is nice in this case
5. Throw in your coir, let it expand until its stir-able.
6. mix all additives up in a bowl, pour it all in.
7. Make sure you mix it all in really good, you want an even consistency.
8. Put lid on pot and let it sit for a minute or two Substrate will get into 200F range, this is fine
9. Pour substrate into bucket, cover, let cool.  It will stay above 170F for an hour and cool overnight
10. This will be your mix.
11. add that mix thats currently in the bucket to colonized WBS and put the blend of the two in a 6qt tub
12. put small tub into large speakers for stealth
13. harvest the fungus and hydrate the sub between flushs

if you want a dub tub you break the cakes up and spawn or just put them in the bottom like they are.

or make some holes in the dub tub and put down perlite and a cake and now you have a shotgun FC

8. don't crumble. Counterproductive.
9. you can put wbs in a shotgun if you case it. For some reason it wont pin w/o casing.
10. perlite in cakes? why? since when?
11. only if you've used it before. New can go in as is.

right not mixed perlite into cake, but letting the cake sit on top of the perlite
take cake, place on alumnum foil, sit cake on perlite, right?

usually better to put some kind of barrier to keep the myc from colonizing the perlite. Just to keep it cleaner for future use.

barrier, so thats where the square of aluminum foil comes in?
what would be better than an alumnum foil square under per cake to barrier?

so a square of alumnum foil under each cake works just fine as a barrier?

no, u posted on my thread. was just checking cause i asked if a square of alumnum would work as an ideal barrier.
so i get it, jar lids, plastic, aluminum, anything to seperate the cake from the perlite.  makes sense

thanks anonjon

You'll see once you get going that cakes are hard to foul up. Optimization doesn't matter much. You could just as easily stick the cake directly in the perlite. It would benefit from the extra moisture reservoir. but you might find a mycelial network in your perlite. Does it matter? Probably not much.

how is crumbling cake counter productive when it gives more surface area to grow, right?  where is cake it just grows around it's circumfrance basically, right?

and at this point, could just cake, dunk and roll, place in a 6qt on alumnum barriers above a floor layer of perlite, like in the vids, except itll be a mini shot gun.    hows that sound?

the wbs and casing sounds like more steps to cause a contam.  so cake, dunk and roll, alumonum square, floor of perlite, couldn't go wrong.

thanks alot btw, u really helped

instead of WBS:

1. knock up jar pf cake style,
2. once colonized dunk and roll,
3. fill about an inch of perlite in 6 qt.
4. place aluminum square below cake to barrier between perlite and cake
5. place in 6qt mini shot gun
6. hide small tub in LARGE speakers.
7. fan blowing against wall behind speakers, indirect air flow
8. fruit.  Rinse perlite.  Reuse perlite for next flush?

Casing mixes are pretty resistant to contam if done correctly. But there's no benefit to taking a perfectly good cake and smashing it without adding more nutrients. You're just forcing it to expend energy reforming itself. The point of crumbling a cake is to inoculate a larger quantity of substrate. There'd be no point to crumbling and adding a non-nutritive casing layer. It would work, but bring no benefit.

4. place aluminum square below cake to barrier between perlite and cake
5. place in 6qt mini shot gun pollyfill holes.
6. hide small tub in LARGE speakers.
7. fan blowing against wall behind speakers, indirect air flow
8. give at least 9 hours of light, mist, leventually fruit.  Rinse perlite.  Reuse perlite for next flush?

thanks for posting golden.
i did the reading, the search baring, the listening, the questioning and obvious the posting
this is the plan and it will work:thumbup:

www.mushroomvideos.com, my 1-8 is the same as the video, just a smaller tub
the videos are the same as this, just different size tub:
i updated what i said cause before wasnt right before.

updated: no polly fill, inch half perlite

CAKE
1. knock up jar pf cake style, B+,
2. once colonized soak cakes for 24 hours, dunk in water and roll in verm,
3. fill about an inch half of perlite in 6 qt.
4. place aluminum square below cake to barrier between perlite and cake
5. place in 6qt mini shot gun.
6. hide small tub in LARGE speakers.
7. fan blowing against wall behind speakers, indirect air flow

With all due respect, you don't know what you're doing and you clearly will fail.  You seem eager to grow mushrooms so why not use these to start:  http://www.themadseason.com/growbags.asp
While you let these grow use the time to research other methods.

Regarding your "plan," 1. a dub tub is one tub upside down on top of another, that's not what you're doing so don't call it a dub tub.  2. you don't put polyfill in shotgun holes.  3.  putting the tub in a speaker defeats the purpose of a shotgun.

theres no reason it wont work
its just a tub, and it does work i found examples of this in the search
its basically the same as the videos, dunk and roll place in a plastic container.

You can safely ignore the jackass above. But you do want to make sure that air is able to flow up thru the holes in the bottom of the fc. If you are concerned about contamination, there's no reason you can't use polyfill in the holes, but it's generally unnecessary.

Your plan sounds ok, but a 6 quart shotgun fc is a pretty significant innovation. You should probably research and try to find an example to imitate. Since this is a secret grow, have you considered letting the cakes fruit invitro (inside the jars), so that you don't have to have a fruiting chamber at all?

Another option is to just use a sealed fruiting chamber (no holes at all). It's blasphemy to suggest this on this forum for some reason, but it does work perfectly fine. Then you don't have to worry about the hole size / rh in your small fc. It's also well suited to being in a dirty, dusty place (hidden behind a speaker).

i have considered even just making the stones, in the jar.
i like the idea of no holes too though ill have to fan it 4 times a day, which isnt a bad idea really.
pollyfill would keep out the contams mostly or i could just make it no holes.  and fan it 4 times a day
could give it holes and polyfill and just indirectly fan it, like pointing a fan against a wall behind the tub

i ment one choice out of those, either polyfill, no poly, or no holes i ment.  consideirng it will be in a speaker it might be best no holes to avoid contam from dust etc, yeah?

the reason people use polyfill has nothing to do with contams.  It is used to prevent too much humidity from escaping the tub.

6-8 qt tub [Re: mama]
    #11005473 - 09/05/09 06:06 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

It's basically like the video just different size tub

 "cause i did it mmmmmmyyyy wayyyyyyy"

3inchs perlite bottom rather than 1.5 inchs so that way theres enough perlite

The size issue being 6qt, i might go for 8 qt  that way they have enough room when they grow taller

i know it's for humidity, i figured it also helps keep out some contams, get caught on the polly rather than inside.

Hey Mama sorry for being a little harsh yesterday.  In the morning you were about to buy and case a presterilized bag of WBS and a few hours later you had moved on to doing a pf-tek grow so I figured you didn't know what you were doing.  You should allow your account to receive PMs and I'll send you something helpful.

Well as of yesterday morning she knew very little http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11002885.  She was bumping her thread every 10 minutes and constantly editing the posts.  I'm not usually one to bark at people and tell them to use the search engine but in this case I though it was deserved.  Anyway I tried to give her some real help via PM but her account doesn't accept them.

well i've actually been communicating with her via PM since last month.. i agree the search function can be useful but doesnt always bring up exactly what the person is looking for.. people learn in diffeent ways.

Honestly, no one forced you to read the thread and if you have nothing useful to add than maybe you shouldn't post at all.. since you are bitching about her bumping her threads than why are you bumping it.. comeon' man show some love.

Mama IMO if your going to put perlite in the bottom of your FC, you should elevate it a little in your speaker box.  You should also put 1/4 inch holes every 2 inches.  The reason you do this is so air can flow through the damp perlite and bring moisture up to the mushrooms.

Your idea may work, Ive just never heard of it working.  Im not bashing your idea either, Im just trying to make your first grow a successful one.

Before I found this site, I tried to set up my own grow area with no idea what to do.  I spent at least 5 hours hollowing out a big dresser...  connected florescent lights, and hollowed out every other drawer.  I planed on putting the spawn in every second drawer.  This plan obviously would not work.  It had absolutely no FAE.  It could not be misted since it was wood, and the shrooms only had 3 inches to grow...  I had to scrap the whole thing, and set up a couple shotgun FCs.

Im just trying to help you out so you dont put a lot of time and effort into something that may not work.  Since your not sure what your doing, maybe it would be best to go with something someone else has proven to work for your first grow.

But you know what they say- opinions are like assholes, everybody has one...  good luck!

im alot more certain i know what im doing than before, though im ready to fail if i do.For the air flow ill have a baby lil baby small low powered fan blowing against a wall, not a big fan, small fan blowing against the wall.  the tub will be visible from the wall, but not by people walking around in the room, the air flow will bounce off the wall, thus causing a good air flow.  if it were a big fan  i wouldnt recommend that because it would be too powerfull and might even increase chances of failure, just might.  a small baby fan low powered off the wall. bouncing back lightly softly against the tub, very gently, just enough for free air exchange

What about your light source?  If you put a light in the speaker it will be obvious to anyone walking in the room.  Not only behind the speaker but probably through the grill in front.  If stealth is very important to you then I think it's better to tuck a FC away in a closet than inside a speaker right out in the open.
