Ohhhhh this is my favorite recipe:
500 ml pure water (I used RO/DI water) 10 ml Light Karo 1 g Extra Light Malt Extract
Here’s a breakdown of the same recipe for different volumes
600 ml pure water 12 ml of Light Karo 1.2 g Extra Light Malt Extract
250 ml pure water 5 ml of Light Karo 0.5 g Extra Light Malt Extract
I pressure cooked the jars for 30 min @ 15psi. I let it cool then inoculate.
I purchased 1 pound of the malt extract on eBay for about $12.00 including shipping. That might be a high price for 1#, but it was sell worth it. 1 pound will likely last a lifetime.
I inoculated both jars using a piece of stem tissue (clone) on 6/01/09. These LCs were 12 days old when I took these pics.
Here's a quart jar:

Here is a pint jar of the same batch:

Here's some 15 days old. :
Quart.

Pint

Here's a GT clone LC I tried, but I'm not too impressed because it's a bit foggy in comparison to the others. I'm sure it's usable, but likely contaminated. MYC absolutely loves the malt, but unfortunately so does contams.

As for lids ... this is what I've been doing:

I'm using 300 ml of water in a jar with 12 ml of pure honey,i sit my jar of water in a pot of simmering water for 10 Min's then add my 12 ml of pure honey and leave it in to simmer for another 5 Min's then take it out and gently rotate the jar up side down and back around till all the honey is dissolved into the water.its also important to have a breather on your lid ,i use pillow stuffing !and when the jars are ready p c the for 13 min at 15 psi and no longer then 15 Min's!

LC are good, but I think its better to do this grain LC tek. That way you can see any contams growing on the grain before you make the LC. The only bad thing about LCs is they can be contaminated from day 1, and you not even know it until you ruin 10 qts of spawn.

^^^^ that is the correct answer. As for lids, I like lids with EZ-Port Needleless connectors. Easy to make, work well.
I like to use Grain LC to start regular LC too- for those, I use dextrose+malt, usually with a little yeast.
