Thin Pins - problem with my chamber or strain?
    #11004230 - 09/05/09 01:01 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I recently have a batch of cakes come in with just extremely....thin pins. My flushes are embarrassingly small not even 10g per flush.

Could this be to a low % of brown rice flour in the mix?

I would post pictures, but the connection I live in Ibiza and the internet is terrible and photo uploads take too long.

If you used the correct mix of one part brown rice flour, one part water and two parts vermiculite, then I'd suspect the small fruit size is related to either moisture content of your cakes or insufficient lighting.

Those torn caps area sign of low humidity! They are dry thats why they rip when they grow.

If you're using 6500K lighting, which you should be, then try moving the light source closer to your substrate.  Like, anywhere between 10-15" is usually good.

Make sure you're providing a good amount of FAE by fanning your FC at least 3-4 times a day (spaced apart).  I fan more often if I can.

Make sure your humidity is high (upper 90s) and make sure you're providing additional moisture from misting.  Just don't directly mist your pins and make sure there isn't standing water on your pins.

Remember that your mushrooms are going to be about 90% water by weight, so keep in mind that they looove water!

The more grows you do the better you get at it.  Trust me.

Good luck

I've never been a fan of misting as of the old rumor of aborted pins..

I have recently started to increase misting. I also have tops that will tear also. I could be suffering from low humidity, despite the sidewalls being drenched in water.

I could fan it on a regular basis. I only get to do this once or twice a day.

Mist the surface of your grow. It will not harm cubes. Don't over saturate, but mist it. You'll see a big difference.

my pins have been thin and my flushes pretty weak, too, although i have seen some improvement recently. i don't use artificial light, i count on the sunlight that comes into my room through an open window (no curtain). i heard that natural sunlight is sufficient but now i'm thinking that an artificial light would make a big difference. guess it's time to buy a lamp!

Incorrect.

That has nothing at all to do with humidity.  That's caused by very rapid growth, which often ends up splitting the caps.  Cracked caps, otherwise known as scaling is caused by low humidity.  That's not what feelfunny's picture shows.

My first grow turned out quit nice. I have yet to have a flush weigh in at under 45 grams wet. I would suggest a coolmist setup, not perlite. Everyone told me to just use the old shotty fc but I went with the coolmist and am very excited in the results. I have picked over 45g dry from 6 cakes. 6 first flushes and 3 seconds. Plus you don't have to fan or mist, and can pick a humidifier up for under ten dollars at goodwill they have tons. Its a good investment.
