I know it's been asked a million times before.....humidification

I'm no noob when it comes to grows...........however this is my first grow using perlite and RR's shotgun FC tek. I've always used an ultrasonic for my cakes as I have a fairly large setup (martha's) when it's all up and running. I've got about 5 inches of perlite in my 55qt rubbermaid ( about "1 x 2 ft" or so, I'm not going in there to measure)tub and I've been misting and fanning, yet my RH stays around 80% which ain't doing squat for uncased cakes. I don't know if I need to drill more holes, plug some up, etc etc. I hate to go out and buy another ultrasonic or other humidifier for just this reason. I've got a small aquarium air pump sitting around but no bubble wands or stones. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated in advance guys.
PS: My ambient RH is around 60%. I'm thinking of plugging every single hole and going back to a sealed container...........ionno. Never messed with perlite before as it sounded a bit messy for my tastes. I've had several cakes in there for a bit that aren't even pinning yet as they should have a week ago....I'm about ready to stick em in my bathroom with the door shut and leave my hot water shower running 24\7 ( and yes ppl, that's a joke). just thought of another question whilst I'm at it. I hear ppl swear up and down that popcorn is a very poor substrate but with fast colonization times, has anyone tried a mixture of some for of smaller grain? Like 75% popcorn and 25% "something"( I've always used rye grass seed as it's horribly cheap and available to me)
Oh and I've been a lurker here for ages so thanks to everyone and their informative posts.

i run 2 SG with a ultra sonic that runs for 15 min every other hour. i dont fan or do anything!
u can vaguely see the tube connecting to the top one on the right. the ultra sonic sits over there.
i have recently had success with this setup

What kind of hygrometer are you using? How did you calibrate it?

I've been a victim of shitty hygrometers before. I realized that they weren't working correctly when I wrapped them in a wet towel for an hour and they read 70-80%.

At that point you have to calibrate it. No commercial hygrometer is designed for what we do with it- it's not that they are crap, it's because we run them at 100.00% for weeks on end.

I realize that now. I don't even use one anymore personally. I'm just saying that the cheapies that you can't calibrate are crap. It took me a few weeks to figure that out in the beginning.

i bought an awesome analog hygrometer from a cigar shop that can be calibrated. ive had it for a couple of months, and i have had to calibrate it 1 time.
it cost me ten dollars.
i bought a digital outdoor hygrometer from wal-mart that cant be calibrated and it will only read accurateley to 85% for 15 dollars. it broke.
i dont really pay much attention to it anymore personally either, but they are really useful when you make a new FC and you are trying to figure out how much of whatever you need to keep humidity up.

I've said this a hundred times before, but build your shotgun terrarium by the tek and your humidity will be mid to upper 90s. That means don't run an ultrasonic or any other humidifier into it and for damn sure don't run a hose from a silly air pump, which forces all your nice humid air right out of the terrarium. RR

I know I know RR, we make ya sound like a broken record lol. I'm using a hygrometer I got from a tobacco shop and calibrated by wrapping in a wet towel for close to an hour. No air pump is being used as of yet, nor any other means of electronic humidification. I went by the tek as closely as I could but didn't measure distance between holes or such. My question is if there weren't quite enough holes, or even too many, would this cause the RH to hover where it is?

Too few are more likely to cause low humidity, as is failure to drill holes on the bottom and elevate the tub. Air is supposed to enter from the bottom passing through the perlite on the way up. I can leave the lid off my terrariums in desert dry conditions and the humidity is still over 90% a week later. RR

Well I reckon I'll drill a few more and see what happens, not like I can't plug em back up if need be. Thanks for the input all

Around this area I was limited to "miracle grow's perlite" bag. After thoroughly washing it, draining, etc etc. I can't help but notice how small it is in diameter. Just wondering if this might contribute to more settling, becoming more compact and limiting airflow from the underside?
