Condensation in my coir trays
    #11000837 - 09/04/09 07:34 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Two days ago I spawned 2-1 pint BRF/VERM jars to 4 dry quarts of a 80coir/20verm substrate mix, couldn't lay my hands on any gypsum or coffee grounds as I just recently moved in and don't have a coffee maker yet.

There is a good bit water condensed on the tinfoil roof, I don't have any micropore so I didn't want to risk it with opened holes.
Is that bad?

Thank You

Lately I have been covering my trays with tyvek. I am actually in the testing phase because I've never heard about anyone trying this before. So far it's a 100% success with 3 trays. NOT a single speck of condensation!

This pic is at 7 days:

Whenever I cover my trays with foil ... even with several holes, I always get condensation. I'm not even incubating my trays, I'm just keeping the trays in a cabinet at room temp.

Condensation occurs when a warmer higher RH climate meets a cooler surface. This condensation drips onto the surface of my trays forming pools. Pooling water causes over saturation of specific locations within the bulk sub. This oversaturation I suspect inhibits colonization. Lack of colonization can lead to contamination.

I do not know this for a FACT, but I suspect that this could be a common cause to contamination.

The mycelium produces heat and this heat causes a temperature differential which in turn causes condensation.  It's perfectly normal.

so we keep our jars in a hotter environment like a garage and coir substrate trays to recolonize inside the house?

Condensation is perfectly normal if or when foil or other impervious materials are used to cover your trays. I have always waited until my trays have become well colonized, uncover them, tip them to one side/corner to allow the pooling water to run off, then I recover them.

When the trays appear to be 100% colonized I've had to drain them again. This I would like to avoid which is why I've been covering them with tyvek as a test just to see if anything BAD happens. For instance what if my trays prematurely dry out due to too much fresh air.

Maybe covering them with tyvek 'could' help a lot of people that do not have 'field consistency' down pat. What if they tend to over saturate their bulk subs. Maybe the tyvek will help the excess moisture escape. What if the grower doesn't have ENOUGH moisture in their bulk sub ... maybe the tyvek will hinder the grow.

That's kinda what I'm playing with right now. I can't see any harm in it so far. Actually the pic above is sort of a Rez Effect tray, but with a little cow poo compost in the mix. I think the verm was a bit below 'field capacity' so I'm interested in finding out how well the first flush performs.
