gypsum ?
    #11000718 - 09/04/09 07:08 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Correct me if I'm wrong here, the gypsum used for a casing layer is the same stuff used to make drywall, that white chocky stuff?and if this is right that means i can just tear a some drywall [gypsum board] apart and use that to mix my casing layer ...right?

Yes but you want to add to your substrate not your casing...

no i wouldn't make any holes in the walls ,i was just joking ,i have lots of drywall around!,,,so you don't use gypsum for casing ? I'm confused hear one person say to use it in my casing and I'm now told not to use it in my casing but to use it in my substrate, this is getting confusing!may i ask for some reason behind these theory's

Use gypsum in substrates and casing layers, plus lime in casings if used.  There's really no benefit to casing with cubensis, so it's not an issue for most people here.

I beg to differ on that opinion, If the OP cares to look up what Hyphae
has to say on this issue it will broaden there horizon.

I personally use a casing on all my trays tubs, I have personally found it to work better for me in my situation.

To each is there own.

Find the way that works for you and use it. Just becuse one thing works for me doesent mean it will work for another:thumbup:

Yes, plain grains need a casing layer, but most of us use our grains to spawn to bulk, which doesn't require casing.

Use gypsum in your grains.  Either add a tablespoon or so to each few gallons of soak water, or if you don't soak, add a pinch between your thumb and forefinger to each jar before sterilizing.

I'd suggest that if one were to get their gypsum by powdering the inside of drywall you should look at the manufacturers name and drywall type/number printed on it and find an MSDS (material saftey data sheet) or patent [1] online to see just whats in it before pulverizing it. Some fire retardant types contain glass fiber that you would not want to breathe! Fire resistant and other types may contain boric acid (water soluble, it could be washed out) which is bad for lungs and mycelium in more than trace amounts, and other brands may contain polymers and such to tailor the product to its specialized function.
The cheapest drywall may be best- less chance of glass fibers, fungicides, resins, etc.
