Whats the deal with people making all these funky casing mixes, like peat and verm or coir, peat and verm ,is there anything wrong with using just verm, if all it does is supply extra moisture whats the deal? or is it that these other mixes hold more water then the verm alone?

peat for contam resistance, lime for ph (also for contam resistance), gypsum for calcium and sulfur, verm for moisture balance
coir is not a true casing material...is more like a bulk substrate

Um, difference is contam resistance, pinset, yield, fruit size, etc...
Difference between verm and optimal? Who knows..
Best?
50/50+ is pretty much the standard i think. 45% peat 45% verm 5% lime 5% gypsum?

I used verm the other day. Works fine. The other stuff is to provide optimal conditions, but I don't think it's worth the trouble. Just my opinion though.

Straight grains will need a casing layer to fruit, ie if only rye was used.
