Bone meal stinks!? Too high pasturization temp??
    #10999146 - 09/04/09 02:02 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I've had a couple oven pasturized bulk batches come out smelling terrible.  I think it might be the bone meal additive because that seems to be the variable that causes it.  When I use higher amounts I've gotten really raunchy smelling bulk.  I can swear it's not the poo or straw because those are constants and never smell. (actually smell good, if you know what I mean).  Anyways my question is.... Has anyone experienced the bad smell using bone meal?

The only other variable it could be would be my oven temp or cook time.  Always get an internal temp up to 170-175,  but the dry temp of the oven varies based on how much time I have.  It's either 200 that takes 6-7 hours for a 170 internal temp or 250 which takes 4-6 hours.  Could it be my outer bulk is getting to high above proper pasturization temps?

Either way the smell is right after pasturization... And they usually colonize just fine. Despite the smell.  Anythoughts anyone?

Thanks!

I just spawned to bulk with substrate that was pasteurized on Wednesday. It had a slightly disagreeable odor. I am a little worried, (not worried enough to start over though).
I've heard "don't worry about it", and "Oh damned dude, toss it and start over", so we'll see. I did use some of my grain to make some G2G transfers so worse case scenario, toss 'em.  I'll know better next week.

I didn't use any bone meal though. My ingredients were: Horse manure, Coco coir, Verm, Coffee, Gypsum, Worm castings, Wheat germ, and H2o.

:goodluck: to me and you!

Amen,  I was terrified when I did my first couple tubs that stank.  I did ten in all and two really almost made ya sick to smell.  Thought it was failure for sure.  Well, one of those stanky tubs ended up being the best out of the ten so it's not certain death.

It is a unique stank though... that is why I'm focusing on Bone meal.  I would definitely like to avoid the smell if possible.  It really smells up the house like someone shit on the floor and spread it around... omg  yeah thats what it smells like.

Well, to keep it stealth, go to the drugstore and buy some adult diapers. Open the bag of diapers and leave them in plain sight. Then when your guests wrinkle their noses and look at you funny, you just give them the "What? I don't get it..." look.
