Black powdery contaminant inside of cake?
    #10998360 - 09/04/09 11:33 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I've been having trouble with getting a 2nd flush out of my pf-tek cakes. As an experiment i decided to cut one of the cakes in half and soak half overnight to see if i can "cold shock" the cakes. When I cut it in half i noticed a few clumps of BLACK powder... i was really surprised since there was never any signs of contamination and I ate the first flush with no problems. Is there anything that it could be which isnt a contam? And since i didnt have any problems with the first batch is it ok to eat the next??? I couldnt get a good pic where you could see the black clearly sry.

probably black mold, avoid it like the plague.

From what I hear if the mushrooms grow from a contaminated substrate there fine to eat unless the mushrooms are contaminated witch is rare.

I know that other molds could potentially fuse with mycelium and the shrooms can pick up toxins... but this doesnt seem to be the case since the clumps of black are isolated. Im afraid since i cut them open that their spores will spread. Ill just have to wait and see since im not to concerned about these cakes seeing as they havent been fruiting anyway and i have many more colonizing.
