Shotgun drip shield
    #10996343 - 09/04/09 12:20 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

I've noticed in the RR shotgun terrerium video there is no drip shield in place for not wetting the cakes while misting. In the tek's it says to have a drip shild over the cakes so they dont get sprayed with mist. Do I need a drip shield or do you guys just mist directly over the cakes? Thanks

I think the whole drip shield idea is out dated information.

I, as many, if using cakes, just mist directly over them. Works fine.

Yes, cakes can be misted directly.  In the early days it was thought it took a sealed up terrarium to maintain humidity.  They also had poor to mediocre performance back then.  We now know that fresh air exchange is a major pinning trigger, and that you can mist cakes directly as long as they don't sit there wet in still and stale air.  In fact, you NEED to mist your substrates to replace the moisture that evaporates, which is another major pinning trigger.  We've come a long way in knowledge of mushroom cultivation in the last dozen years or so.

To answer your question, drip shields are not needed, and in fact counterproductive.
