I've got one like that. It's ok for small jars. Check the gasket, probably need to replace it.

Yeah, I had one like that too, and it did some successful pint rye jars, but one day while cooling down the safety fuse blew because it was old, so make sure you know where to get replacement parts before getting into anything serious.

if the gasket has cracks, really small cracks somewhere around it, that means its dry, replace it.  another thing, if you see steam come out from around the rim, along with little drops of water dripping out of it, its too old and out of warp, in that case change the pressure cooker.

I have a shitty Mirro that fits 4 quart jars. I don't even know if it works as it is supposed to. I'm new to grain jars, but, using my crappy PC, I've yet to have a contamination, even though grains seem to be more prone to it.

that means when water reaches its boiling point you have to turn the heat down enough to maintain the pressure but not too much to drop it, if it releases steam its because the heat is still too high so water evaporates more thus creating more steam, which in turn more pressure, which must be released, if you lower your heat setting a little youll see a drop in steam release, from there you can gauge your heat setting, you need to hear release now and then but not constantly, depending on how long you pressure cook for and how much water there is inside, you might run out of water.  all in all your heat setting is too high if there is a constant pressure release.

try this, drop your jars in, turn the element on  high , when water boils close the PC, shouldnt be long, youll here the pressure building, once you hear one or two pressure release, drop the heat a little, then go with your wits and see how much you should drop the heat without dropping pressure.

I always grease my gaskets with cooking oil before using.

definitely worth trying, my PC has been leaking a little water on the top, and a little steam coming out of the rim.. not much though. It's still helping me out, but dunno for how much longer. PC's just cost a lot, but having fun with this hobby is worth it
