Pinheads falling off cake?!
    #10993492 - 09/03/09 04:28 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I would like to start by saying that i am a beginner to the world of mycology and I have only grown 1 time before this grow... This time i am growing B+ strain (1/2pint pf)  and was pleasantly surprised at the quantity of fruit on my first flush, after the first flush of 3 cakes(roughly 20g dried) I dunked and soaked all 3 cakes leaving them submerged for different times(3,6,12hrs). I coated them in verm. misted the "casing" and waited. after 2 days mycelium was already coating the layer of verm. but it took another 5 days to even see 1 pin! after 7 days in the fruiting chamber only 5 pins were visible (which i thought was really odd since the first flush had 50-60 pins within 2 days...) i noticed that the cakes were a bit dry and misted them a little and they soaked it up like crazy. i misted several more times thinking that the cakes were too dry... 1 of the cakes started to get a clear coating of gelly-like mycelium...which i have not seen before...this led me to believe that i added too much moisture so i stopped misting the cakes directly. after 2 more days of normal misting/fanning the pins grew very slow reaching only about 1 inch, and today when i came home from work all 5 pins had fallen off the cake... What the HELL?!! was it bad that i misted the cakes? ive searched other threads which claim it could be a genetic thing but the first flush was spectacular. Any Ideas? or i am i stuck with dud cakes?

they sound like aborts, it happens, mushies are 90% water so misting cant hurt unless your leaving puddles.  give it more time.

Your yield on the first flush makes up for the second.

It could be genetics yes, genetics on MS vary from mushroom to mushroom so even more from flush to flush.

Dunking them all for 12 hours between the 2 flushes would have helped them reach their genetic potential, whatever it was.

True, the first flush was more than what i got out of my entire first grow hehe... Anyone have any ideas on the clear dense mycelium? the only reason i know that it is even mycelium is because it is rhizomorphic strands connected to normal white rhizo. growth... Im beginning to think im gonna be getting some mutants.

I had something grow on a cake of mine, either today or yesterday, can't remember... It was a cake going to the third flush. It had taken over the verm and it felt different from mycelium. I imagine it was some kind of mold that would soon start to sporulate, it was tossed straight away.
