OMFG! YOUVE GOT MOLD!
    #10992388 - 09/03/09 12:51 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

this is my first experience with LC and 1/2pint jars.
...these jars were noc'ed with chitwan lc on 8/28, and the pix were taken yesterday.

i tried to take the pictures of the entire outside of each jar by taking the first picture, then turning the jars a third, snap, turn, snap.

there's only one jar out of the 12 that is colonizing a little slower. but 2/3rds of them look to me, like they might be ready by day 8 or 9.
  - i understand that when the cakes are fully colonized, i should wait an extra day before birthing them? then dunk in distilled<? to avoid the chems in tap> water for 24hrs, leaving it in the fridge to soak.<ill probably be adding h2o2 during dunk>
-from what I've read in comparative posts on the subject- rolling in verm to case the cake provides better conditions for fruiting, when compared to only putting verm on the top and bottom of the cake. does anyone have any experience that says otherwise?
-I've also read that some people will stack the half pint cakes, supposedly to save space, increase yield, and the verm in between the two cakes helps to act as a reservoir for water. is stacking my cakes a wasted effort?
-do any of you use h2o2<h.peroxide> in your techniques? seems to be a good additive for just about every step, I've even read about it being used to help make open air transfer possible without a flowhood, or using the oven.
--
  ...
I'm looking for constructive criticism, tips, or hints that any of you could provide on the processes/questions I've ran thru here.
---ahead of time i say, Thank you very much!

You should loosen that foil IMO assuming you are running a dry verm layer.

and you should wait SEVEN days after full colinization before birthing.

I dont mess with h202, that is for battling trich on substrate surfaces but, I hear it wont hurt myc. i would be a bit weary of getting on my musrooms for fear of abort rates going up.

Tap water is OK for dunking, and you don't have to
do it in the fridge. Room temp is fine.

look small to me, like jelly jars. i have some that look exactly the same as well and they are 4 ounce jars. perhaps they make a half pint jar that looks the same as mine, but to me the perspective makes it look like they are the smaller ones.i think its the size of the woodgrain in the pic compared to the jar. also its the quilted crystal jelly jar line by ball and i think those only come in 3 different types of jars the small one like that being the 4 oz size.

btw you should take the foil off if you have a dry verm layer, everyone generally agrees it prevents GE and slows colonization

*either way they should work, lookin good remember to post pics of the results!*

So those ARE 4oz jars.
In that case if they colonize really quick (as they should), you don't have to wait a week after full colonization.
I'd wait 3-4 days max. and birth them.

And I agree with who ever had said to take the foil off, It will give your mold more air and will colonize even faster.

Ive done this already. thanks for pointing it out. i knew about the need for GE in your jars...but each time i checked them i thought about how i didn't want contaminants...so i would end up tightening the foil.
but while i was taking the foil off...on one of the jars there was mycelium growing thru the inoculation hole. perhaps the mix was a bit wet after noc'ing with my LC. i used a dry layer of verm like instructed, but i imagine wicking brought moisture to the top. so fearing contamination<even tho cakes are colonizing well> i replaced the foil with coffee filters rubber banded over the lids.

and going back to the h2o2....in a thread started by 'mycofile' mycofile's bulk neglect report , he gets into some detail about the benefits of using h2o2. the whole thread is very interesting, but more to the point is where he responds to a question...    In reply to:

how feasible would this grow log/tek be w/o the use of a flow hood?

Very feasible. I had one, so I used it. Glove boxes, oven tek etc are good enough. I know plenty of people w/out flow hoods who use agar, grains and grain to grain transfers all the time. The addition of the peroxide makes it even more likely that you can be successful w/out the hood. If you can get grain spawn without a hood, then you can do this without one for sure. And you don?t necessarily have to do a G2G transfer, you could just use a box of quart jars or whatever.

I?ve actually done every step above (cloning w/ peroxide agar, peroxide grain, peroxide G2G transfer) without an oven, glovebox or hood. But if you?ve got one or want one, use it.

--------
I'm not interested in doing any great open air transfers, but i am curious about the way he describes his use of h2o2 throughout his thread, is more as a preventative to contamination.
am i just misinterpreting his thread? or is the information in the thread valid? Ive tried to investigate h2o2 use more fully, but i end up finding alot of "YES IT IS! NO IT'S NOT! YUH HUH! NUHT UH!" on the forums. so ill look into it some more, and maybe someone out there can give me a definitive answer. thanx again all!
