SLICES of mycelium for casing?

I was just sitting here reading about casing teks and how important it is for the substrate and casing layer to be flat (to induce an even layer of pins). What if you took a sterylized, serrated knife and sliced the mycelium (from jars) into 1''-1.5'' slices, then, in accord w/ normal casing tek, put these in the casing and cover it w/ a thin casing layer. It seems like this method would produce the flatest substrate and casing layers, yet I've never heard anyone mention it. Obviously, you would still have to fill in the empty spaces w/ smaller chunks. Would this work? Why or why not? thanks

Works great. Most people slice their cakes, its easier than crubling and the pinning is usually more even in my experience
