I would suggest if you can find some organic rye, that would be best. When i first started trying out grain, i got extremely frustrated trying to work with birdseed. The bags that i baught said organic... but they all seemed to have some sort of preservative that wouldnt let me grow ANYTHING... i thought my spore syringes were dead, but i took the lids off my jars and i couldnt even grow contams. I tried with about 3 other brands of birdseed, all with no success. But hey, if you have some seed that you think should work, why not try it. But as far as grains go, i'd say rye is most commonly used. Remember to use a PC for grains... boiling water just wont cut it!

just my opinion,

yes, use seed, if you can afford it, i would go to a health food store and just purchase a shitload of millet. ie 'Wild Oats'

because you don't have to worry about fungicides or other added chems
-still rinse tho, just to get the dusty particles off (makes a goo)

rye grain in my experience always dries out to easily, im sure alot of people have success w/ rye, it may just be where im getting it perhaps...

I'd go with wheat berries. YOu get those at the bulk aisle in the supermarket. Just boil for a while then P.C.
Some authors say rye is the way to go but in my experience any will work.
