Drying without a fan.
    #1098689 - 11/30/02 05:12 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

It is the winter months and it is very hard to obtain a fan for drying. So I bought 22 pounds of silica gel based kitty litter and am wondering if I can use that in a dessicant chamber. Since I have so much I am wondering if I can just go straight to the dessicant chamber without the fan. The MMGG doesn't mention the use of a fan so I wonder.

Before putting them in a desiccant chamber (regardless of what desiccant you are using), it can help to let them sit, spread out on newspaper/paper towels for 24-48 hours. As long as there is a free flow of air around them, they will dry out significantly even without a fan. Obviously smaller fruit bodies will dry a lot quicker. Either way, the end result should be fine...just watch out for rot.

If you actualy have a cat, I would be careful about where you put the kitty litter..You could end up with some awlful shitty tasting shrooms!

Sea Monkeys are fairly quiet from what I hear.

Hard to get a fan? Damn man everything has a fan!. Try disableing the heating unit on your blow dryer or somthing. You could even take the fan out of your bathroom ceiling and use it temporaraly.

What country are you in? It seems to me that anyone who lives in an area with internet access and a computer should be able to hunt down a damn fan. Go to a thrift store and you'll probably find a fan for less than you paid for 22 pounds of kitty litter. IMHO, the fan is essential for the first 24-48 hours of drying. Then they go into a dessicant chamber to finish off. If you put them into a dessicant chamber freshly picked, the abundance of moisture just requires you to change the dessicant more often.

All of the stores tell me they dont sell fans this time of the season. I have a monitor but I felt around it and didn't feel any wind coming out. The top of my monitor is warm but that's about it.

Base units have fans. monitors don't.
