took a little journey with some friends into the woods today. found nothing in the way of Weilii (but did find a giant mushroom, the size of a basketball in circumference). stoked to be hunting in the South, first time ever looking for Weilii.

Looks like this week has a good chance to be a wet one. I'll be checking the boards regularly for any Weilii developments.

Been cruising this site for about a year or so now and have learned massive and invaluable amounts of info. Finally broke down and signed up.

here's a pic of the giant mushroom found today. anyone know what it might be?

It looks like one to me. Just as a suggestion, to get more traffic towards your inquiries I would recommend making an individual thread unless you REALLY think it's P. weilii or a related species/topic. You will get quicker/a higher possibility of TI responses. Go ahead and make a thread posting those two pictures of the potential Chanterelle . Also, in the future give more information about their habitat including some nearby trees (especially for mycorrhizal species such as Cantharellus). And welcome to the Shroomery and I hope you benefit from your visits.

Lol. From Central America to Virginia, my ass. P. caerulescens, a Psilocybe in the same taxon/section as weilii (Cordisporae), is primarily in Mexico and Central America. They are accustomed to tropical and subtropical climates. Try it and get back to me; I may be wrong. :rolleyes:

Depends what substrate they were found in. Ive heard dung subbalteatus are anywhere from 2-10 times as potent as ones found in grass. I would start with 40 and go from there. Ive dosed 40-200 subbs (usually made into tea) so the potency has a huge range.

I believe that with time, weilii may begin to fruit in other states;
But as of now, weilii are a Georgia exclusive. :laugh:

Every indicator plant/mushroom (and even insect) I've read for this species so far is found in abundance in my local area.

Since you are the God of the Weilii species I would like to ask you; would you please bless me a spore print or two so that I can do some experiments? I made a thread called "spreading the love" that describes the concept of what I want to do if you are interested.

But one thing, you can take my word for it. You will not find any Ps. Weilii in VA. You should either give up your weilii hunt, or make a trip to GA.

If you want to find magic mushrooms in your area look for one that's known to grow there.

Oh, I'm not that naive, I have not been looking for weilii here. :tongue2: I'm just very interested in studying and/or propagating it it because of the similarities in environments between NW GA and my area. The species I am on the look out for right now are ovoids, cintculus, gyms, and maybe liberty caps as I saw them listed under VA's wild active mushrooms. I was going to ask about that, I haven't seen any discussion of liberty caps in my area, but it is clearly listed. Anyone heard of these being found in the mid-atlantic? I originally thought they weren't anywhere near here...

The extreme localization of certain species is truly fascinating. It makes me think much differently about the emergence of new lifeforms, something I previously thought happened slowly and predictably. With mushrooms at least, this does not always seem to be the case!

So has anyone had any luck?  I have seen one person say they found some but I'm pretty darn sure I haven't seen any pictures of any finds for this year.  As for me, I have searched high and low for them.  I have searched lawns both fescue and bermuda bald patches and thick.  I have searched business parks, city parks, sides of the road when I think I see something driving past, trails, deep woods, etc etc.  I've looked under rows of loblolly and raked up the pinestraw I've gone to 4 different woodlands settings and searched on and off the trails sometimes very deep in the woods lifting up toppled loblolly pines and old branches and still nothing.  I have found a variety of different mushrooms and snakes and bugs but no weilii.  I'm assuming it is still too early for the vast majority of them to be out even though we had decent rains all this weekend.  That or they just seem to like certain northern counties better by far.

So should I just postpone hunting for a little while until they are out and about in all their counties where they have been known to grow?

I wouldn't necessarily post pone hunting. Just know that they're not going to be out in abundance yet. Not until atleast august (that's my prediction.)  Although, I do think we'll see SOME spring / summer finds, but I could be wrong. Maybe they're just waiting to unleash in full force. :laugh:

(I don't think what county your in matters much as long as your looking in the right habitats & in the distribution maps. )

- Keep searching dude, but know that when the fall comes, when everyone is finding them without a problem, you'll probably have much better success! :mushroom2: Happy hunting

thanks for the encouragement, Weiliigod. I too have been searching multiple places over the last couple of weeks and have yet to find any. I have found plenty of beautiful fruits but not the one fruit I am most seeking after (the forbidden fruit?). I've also found plenty of mosquitoes, chiggers, and ticks. Forgot how "alive" the Southern outdoors are this time of the year.

Bipolarbear, good to know you're on the hunt as well. i'm just waiting for the first post of the season to pop up on here (with pictures, of course). good luck!

i think its been the lack of rain. we really havent had that much the past couple months. it rains for like 30 minutes then stops. that stuff dries up in two hours. i havent even seen a lot of mushrooms in general honestly. i say one more month and there will be some fresh finds.
