Old 50/50 jar for patching plus... pins?

So how old is too old for an opened jar of pasteurized 50/50 casing substrate. And let's say the grower has opened and used it before. I would think the grower should pasteurize it again. no?
And here's another one i haven't seen on here. Can you patch over little white pins? My guess would be yes, but not a lot.
However, I'm looking for other opinions or experiences. Thanks

Yes, that's one of the reasons why I'm using what's left of my verm for the remaining pf tek jars, and shortly I'll be picking up grains to try my hand at that.
Mold spores can float right in there, and the resealable bags are shitty I can never seem to get that seal to work for me.....I don't trust anything that's sat out, things are done right when they've cooled off, otherwise, it's back to pasteurizing.

Are you talking about patching over pins?

no I don't bother with patching, if there's any contamn with your patch material, rubbing it into an open wound is going to increase the chances of it gaining a foothold quite significantly. I would make sure whatever you use for that is freshly sterilized, having it sit inside an open bag which can expose it to contaminants and then putting it into probably the most vulnerable spot on your substrate is just asking for it.
So in my case with the verm, it's not even being used for casing material unless it goes in the oven at the very least, and probably not even that, it'll be used for casing jars that'll be pressurecooked, since that is the only way that I can be assured that I won't be introducing a contamn that could have floated in (and probably did given the moldy dish that was sitting in my kitchen for a few days).
Casings and patching out to be as sterile as you can get it.

Well say your 50/50 patching material is in a jar and that jar has no signs of contams?
You should also consider that by sterilizing casing material you open the door wider for contams because it's like wiping out an area of any life and then seeing which life form can start to inhabit again. So there wouldn't be any good bacteria to keep bad bacteria or fungus away from inhabiting the patching substrate.
