Garden Sulphur as compliment or substitute for gypsum

Have read a lot on the importance of gypsum in substrates, as it contains vital sulfur. Well recently I came across some "Espoma" brand Garden Sulpur.  Can anyone comment on the use of garden sulfur as a substitute or complement for gypsum?



I checked Espoma's website and couldn't find the exact contents/ingredients, but when I read the label in the store it was 100% pure S (sulfur).

What do you all think?

Don't like to bump threads, but I know there is someone out the with an answer.  This question seems rights up RR's alley as he always has an answer about gypsum.

The bag was $20 bucks, so I'm not too keen on blowing that much cash on something that will kill any effort.  If I don't get any response about it I'm putting it on my to do list if I ever find any extra time/money to try.

I would be very surprised if someone out there hasn't tried this already.

It's not a replacement for gypsum, which contains sulfur AND calcium, thus it provides those minerals without altering pH.  Mycelium likes an acidic substrate, so if you're not using something that's already acidic such as coir and/or coffee grinds, add a bit of sulfur.  Just know it's not a sub for gypsum, which should be available at the same place you got the sulfur.

TY sir; figured you would come through.  I was under the impression that the sole purpose of gypsum was to add sulfur. Didn't think Ca was that important as a mineral, just as buffer. Also, I have never added an acidic supplement (coffee or coir) and have never paid much attention to pH in bulk (only casing).  I will probably try to add some coffee or coir in the future, and if I get the chance & cash, I will try garden sulfur.

That garden sulfur smells like sulfur though!

Mushrooms are one of the biggest suppliers of dietary calcium and all species benefit from adding calcium to substrates.  That's why we use gypsum.
