Un-inoculated jars contaminating
    #10978525 -

So a friend recently started his 10th or 11th grow in a new house and has had some disturbing results.  Normally he experiences mabye 1 out of ten contaminating but on this grow has gotten more like 5 out of 10.  He used the EXACT same sterile procedure as always and used the same materials to make the jars.  The filters were made of polyfill that was tightly fit into 1/4 hole in the lid.  He also had two extra jars so he just threw them up on the the shelves with the jars that were incubating.  2 weeks later he noticed that one of those jars, that had not been inoculated was contaminated too with black mold and a little trich.  Any ideas for my friend guys?

P.S. 1 pint jars were cooked for 2 hours each and allowed to cool overnight

Something wrong with your jar prep procedure. If there wasn't, your control jar would NOT have contaminated.

I would toss the Poly-fil and use Tyvek.

Polyfil vs tyvek won't save you from poor technique or a contam-rich environment.
You didn't say what kind of jars, or how they were prepared- but it might be time for a pressure cooker.

Boiled? Probably your problem, Use a PC. You'll achieve better results.

Example:

I PC'd 10 pint jars on 8-25, I only innoced 7 of them. The other 3 I didn't have enough spores at the time. The 7 i did inoculate are at 80+ % colonized and the 3 i didn't are clear and contam free. Im going to let those 3 jars sit for another week and then inoculate them to see if the sterile condition remains. Also my jars have FAE so not so fast souring grains for me

I use a filter patch made from 700 micron 3M air filter for the first time this grow, and well all i can say is fuck Tyvek and fuck polyfil. My jars are at 80% after 4 days  and contam free.

I've never had a contam make it through tyvek..you're product may be far Superior but Tyvek on my wbs lids has always yielded 100% contam free just saying......e

Oh by all means use Tyvek  Im just going to run some more trials with Tyvek vs Air filter and see what i get. Im seeing faster colonization tho. Prolly because of the greater gas exchange.

Next grow will be a control run. 10 runs with tyvek 10 with 700 micron filter. All 20 will be  Treasure Coast. We'll see if there is a greater difference

I use both tyvek and polyfil for everything and I have been ridiculously careless lately with no contams.  As long as everything I use is sterilized with alcohol/flame and pressured cooked for 50 min i'm good to go.  I live in a 2 year old condo and the only mold I've seen in this building is a tiny bit under the rim of my toilet....  I have had 2 contams, that's it. and they were from me dropping sterilized grain on the dirty floor and picking it up and sealing it back and and inoculating. (i knew it would contam but didn't care.)

Then we have my friend living down the street from me...in a basement style house maybe 20-30 years old and not in the best of shape..also 3 semi-dirty college kids living in there.  They have had 100% contam rates using my exact sterile procedure.

And lots of people have grown lots of jars using polyfil, myself included.
Any of these will work if you do it well, and none will save you from failing if you do it poorly.
It's just a filter.

Jars were pcd btw for 2 hours and they were made from wbs.  I was wondering more if it could be this older house with kinda dirty carpet thats been here for who knows how long.

Doesn't make sense. If sterile procedure was followed, jars would not contaminate from a dirty carpet, a shotgun fruiting chamber is a different matter.

Yup.

2 keys to no contams

1. PC
2. And flame /wipe needle on each injection.

when you guys flame sterilize how far up the needle do you let the redness climb?  I usually go about 1/3 up the needle and then wrap it in an alcohol soaked piece of paper towel.

Let the flame turn the needle red hot 2/3 of the way up and then NEVER touch it with anything before injecting.  You can't get cleaner than red hot.  Let the needle cool for two or three seconds and then use.  The first drop or two of solution will sizzle and finish cooling the needle.  Always flame between each and every jar to prevent cross-contamination.

If the non-inoculated and PCd jars contaminated, either the lids don't fit right or you're not using the PC properly.  Nothing should have been able to get in.  If your previous attempts were leading to a ten percent failure rate, you need to examine your whole procedure.  Something is going south on you.
