Advice on this strange contam.
    #10977803 - 09/01/09 06:36 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Hey all, first post here. Shame it's one of defeat and not a triage of fantastic mazatapec shots.

Well I had a cake which colonized recently, it colonized fully and started to grow pins which got increasingly bigger. When I eventually had the equipment to transfer the cake, I noticed a lot of the mushrooms, now fairly large were blue, some worse than others figured bad bruising due to being cramped (blue right up through the middle but not slimy)
I picked these off and then dunked the cake in spring water for 14 hours, in the fridge, and picked off another few I didn't trust upon removal, put it ontop of damp perlite and into the chamber which got upto about 94% humidity inside.

One day later, the cake and mushrooms (which I think should probably been removed at the beginning too) are being colonized with what I thought looked like cobweb mould, with some other yellowed areas so due to my inexperience I have some questions regarding this mould. (if it actually is cobweb)

When it's on, is it gone? should I throw away the cake now?
Was it lack of FAE which caused this? How many times a day is good practice to fan the propogator?
Does the chamber need thoroughly cleaned out and emptied now?

How can I prevent this happening again for the other cakes which are due to reach full colonization in the next week?

Many thanks

No-one can help?
You guys are the best source of info that's why I'm here, if anyone can offer my some first rate advice that would be great, one of the other cakes are already ready to fruit.

The more I look at the contam, the less I think it's cobweb as it's just furry but not stringy. What say you?  I've also done some reading on it, including the common contam section and the cobweb there looks stringy not like a uniform layer of fur.

I do not know for sure what I see there.  But if no one answers use the old proven standby.

"When in doubt, throw it out".

Always better safe then sorry.

To me it almost looks like mycelium growing on the cap.  Strange.

The cake has just gone back into colonization mode and the mycelium is fluffing up.  It is what you should expect after releasing it from the jar and dunking.  The fresh air and boost in moisture is stimulating new growth and the remaining mushrooms are reverting back to mycelium.  Just pull off any aborted mushrooms and wait for the next flush.

Hmm really? The mycelium on the cakes doesn't look fluffy like this, more soft and stringy in areas. However, the fluffy parts which I thought were cobweb mould do smell very mushroomy so it may very well be mycelium.

Anyone else got a view? Want to be sure I wont contam the only few cakes that made it before I do this

Listen to Workman. When you see the Trusted Cultivator tag under someone's name, it means they know what they're talking about.
