Is this safe to eat when its ready?

Okay, so this is my first time attempting to grow some Golden Teachers. I have only 2 pf cakes (out of 5, the rest just didn't colonize for some reason) that are in a plastic container with wet paper towel on the bottom . I didn't have perlite or anything so I noticed it said I could use wet paper towels. I put the cakes directly on top of the paper towels, which I now regret doing. First, its been a while since the cakes have been in there and they havn't got a lot of light a day. Rarely any but what could I do, I was out of town and forgot about them in the mad rush to pack up and leave. Second, I noticed that the paper towel itself seems to be growing a little mycelliumish looking stuff. Then now some little sprouts have started at the base of one of the cakes, where it meets the paper towel, and also there are some sprouts...on the paper towel? right next to the same cake just on the opposite side. Lastly, I wouldn't be so concerned if it wasn't for the face that MUSHROOMS ARE GROWING OUT OF PAPER TOWEL, and that the towel has red and black like dots on the paper tower in different places? What I mean is that in a random spot on the paper towel, there is a reddish circle, and in other spots a blackish circle (these small black circles just started showing up in the past week).

Now, I am going to start putting them in light every day and try to get them growing good, but first things first. Are these even safe anymore? What should I do to make them safe or what? Any help at all is okay.

Please help. Thank you.

P.S. These cakes also took a long time to colonize. Months.



A lot of the little black dots you see in the pictures are not the same as the ones that developed on the paper towel, they are just verm. and stuff. But there are a lot of random shades and dots of all colors on the paper towel but the cakes seem fine.

ALSO, in the first and last picture the mushrooms growing out of the cake is right above the big red dot. In the second picture, the mushrooms growing on the cake and paper towel is right to the up against the cake.

I see nothing bad in your situation, even good :wink:
The myc. colonize the paper because its a good source of water.
BUT, i see in the pics like black dots :/ looks like mold, closer pics would help

Okay, I got some close ups, but they are bad quality because its a crappy cam. Also, the black dots actually have a greenish tint (so I am pretty sure it is mold...), and now if its mold then what? Also The mushrooms have sprouted a lot over the past week, and i noticed that a lot of them have white dots on the caps, and on the stem below the caps is brownish, is this okay?



The first picture is a close up on the blackish dots, the second is this greenish/blackish area that is combining itself with the myc. The last picture is of the shrooms, with the brownish stem and the white on the caps.

Please I hope I can save my mushrooms from the mold, they just started growing good!!!!

Yes its mold, you better scrab it of the paper before it got to your cakes and shrooms(if still didnt :/)

I had 2 cakes in there, and one was growing the other just started, but I noticed now darkish spots on that cake that didn't grow, so I just threw out the paper towel and that cake, then i took the other cake which was growing shrooms, and moved it to a new home and raised it so it is not touching the paper towel now. Also when i lifted the cake up, i noticed the cake seemed perfectly fine, but two of the mushrooms growing from it had this blackish color on the bottom of them which met the paper towel, so I pulled those two shrooms off and threw them out. Hopefully I can save the rest.

What do you think? Will the rest of the shrooms be okay? Also, if they make it to the stage where they are ready to be consumed, should i just maybe eat one little one and see if I feel sick or anything before eating the rest?

Please respond quick, I am leaving to go to new york in 3 hours and wont be back home until monday night. Thanks so much!

Heh time will say, i think you will be fine, Hate towel paper, goddamn contams everything, even when i try to sprout seeds on it :mad2: :grrr:
Why you want to try ad eat 1 little shroom, you will get nothing of it :lol:

Well thank you me too, this is my first grow, and out of all 5 cakes only 2 did well, then sure enough the damn paper towel took out the other cake! :mad2:

Hopefully though everything will be okay. And I was thinking of just eating a couple aborts to see if my stomach feels upset or anything.

Naa dont do it, they will taste horrible, nthin would happen exept you might feel sick and puke huh.

I left the mushrooms out on the carpet in their little container while i was gone, and i just got back and the mushrooms grew a lot, but there is black on some of the caps and some mushies have a blackish stem and they all have fuzzy stems though. also the paper towel has giant dark black areas but i raised the cake on top of a mason jar lid so it wouldnt touch the bottom but it still managed to have a black paper towel :frown:

is there anything i can do?

Are the caps of the mushrooms are opened already (they shoud be) Because i guess its a spore drop... pics?

i hope i can save them, but i really doubt it... heres some pictures...



its actually not really that black but more purplish. but there are a few caps that are perfectly fine, and the stem is purple fuzzyish but then theres a part that is perfectly white and solid and right above it is the purple skin that is all bunched up, almost like it shedded it

EDIT. Also i noticed that there is a bit of purple on the mason jar lid (which is what the cake is on so it wont touch the paper towel)

I picked the mushrooms because i thought they were ready, and also i think that its just the spores, but a few caps are really dark purple and also the stem is hairy and fuzzyish on a lot of the shrooms. But i have a new concern, that the stems on a couple have some light tan in them and also here and there on the stem (but its very hard to see) there is some greenish, but there isnt a lot of greenish areas. on some bases of the mushroom stem where it would meet the cake (which has a little bit of mycelium on it) has some green dots on it to. I have a good feeling there is a little bit of green mold on there, but a little green mold never hurt nobody though? Correct? But i am very concerned about the fuzzy hair on the stems though. Here are some pics.

What do you think? Should I dry them and eat them with my cousin or maybe eat them fresh or what??? Any help is appreciated! Thank you!



Sorry about the crappy quality, but the first picture is of the purple stem (and yes it looks black, but its mostly purplish) and the second picture is of the base of a few mushrooms where they come together (the bottom left has a few green dots on it but there small) and the third picture is of a stem that has purple on it and a little bit of greenish shade (very very little amount and usually next to purple but its a very very very little amount) and also the middle of the stem is actually a bit tan. And the last picture is of the caps of a few mushrooms, the one that looks all black looks almost greenish in the picture, but its not, its actually just purple mixed with the brownish cap, and the normal looking cap has got me a little concerned because the ring around it kind of has a greenish shade.

Please help. Thank you very much!

EDIT. I am also worried that it possibly could be black mold, but i doubt it because there is a lot of purple but in some areas there is just so much purple that it looks black. And also on some of the stems there is like i said earlier a shedded almost looking part of the stem that is all black/purple and is pulled up and below it is pure white.

The purple is just from da veil opening those are spores and the fuzzys is just myc it dries hard either way..everything is good.

You can do whatever you want now, its up to you, you will get the same thing :wink:
I prefer to dry them because i can know exactly much i need to eat by weight. With fresh shrooms you have to divide liek in 10 or 8 the final mass, for me its pain in the ass.
