why is my cake blue?

i birthed a cake of big mex last week... tuesday to be exact... and i only started seeing pins this morning, monday. it's been really hot where i live for the past couple of weeks and temperatures where the cake's fruiting haven't been optimal. anyway, i've noticed that the cake is slightly tinting blue in a couple of places on its side but most notably at the top where i placed a small amount of moist verm to help retain moisture. i'm just wondering how come this is happening and whether its a bad sign or just a sign that my cake isn't so healthy...i really worry about him. seriously though, any ideas? maybe it's normal..? thanks.

you can keep the humidity up and allow those pins to mature, should only be 3-5 days, then dunk and roll, or you can just pluck those pins and do the dunk and roll now, it's up to you. thems is your options.

i dunked and rolled at birth. can't i just mist? i have been misting daily. i guess i'll just let the pins mature and dunk and roll again. this sure sucks.

I agree add another 2 inches. In all my shotgun FC's I have nothing less then 4 inches of perlite. Do you have a hygrometer?

i have a digital hygrometer which i hear aren't that great. on the plus side, it doubles as a thermometer so....it's not so bad. aboot the extra 4inches, i have heard from between 1-3 inches, now 4. anyway, i mist the sides a couple of times a day. i think humidity is ok since i have a pretty nice looking pinset right now. it just seems to me like my cake starting to dry before its first flush seems kind of weird. then again, i'm not an expert. i think its the heat in this damn place.

Don't pick pins. You can pick aborts, but those pins will mature during the next flush. Pins will even swell up a little after a dunk.

yeah, it seems strange that you can dunk pins for 12-24 hours but at the same time you aren't supposed to mist them directly as it can cause them to abort. ???

I mist the heck out of my tubs. May lead to aborts, may not. IME, not so much.

Don't shoot a stream of water directly onto pins, or onto the substrate. Of course. That's enough force to damage the mycelium. But 'aggressive misting' seems to be fine.

Mist the crap out of them it's fine(cakes, tub, perlite, etc..) The bluing could be from birthing the cakes, it's normal and if you have a nice pin set then don't stress. CH

Another good thing to do is a small pile of verm atop the cake, then moisten it as you see fit.

I don't think you can always assume bluing is due to dryness.
And I also think there's big differences in this regard by strain. This view is supported by the strain info in Cervantes journal where it is written about some strains that they don't like to be misted directly, i.e. turn blue, stall.
My cat had costa rica and pe cakes in the same shotgun fc recently. The costa's had no problem with the mistings. The pe cakes blued severely. The cakes were not rolled in verm, so this problem was probably exacerbated. However the blue cakes are finally pinning, so it's not a crisis. The costa's fruited b4 the pe even pinned. They were soaked too long and pinned under-water. However, these pins did not even abort and are doing fine.
If you think about how different the climates are in various locations around the world, it makes perfect sense that mushrooms would react differently to rain. In some areas where you get very frequent rain, you would expect the mushrooms to tolerate it. In areas where rain comes intermittently, but in torrents, you would expect the mushrooms to abort their pins in expectation of the downpour, but then pin again when the soil starts to dry out. It's called natural selection.

well, i have been misting regularly and i did place some moist verm on top to help retain moisture. thanks anonjon for your input. i guess i'll stop worrying so much about the blueness... when i heard that it was due to drying out i got a little worried but thanks to you i'm not anymore. the strain is big mex, if that makes a difference. still a cube, right? thanks everyone.
