Killing Bugs in Mushrooms

Anyone have tips about how to easily kill bugs in my finds? It's annoying as hell when I bring them home, and there's a few worms inside chomping away, and in a day it's destroyed.

Anyone ever microwave their finds for a few seconds? I was thinking that might work. I was thinking of freezing them but that might affect the taste and texture.

i have a feeling that microwaving would cause massive rupture of cell walls, resulting in a quicker decomposition upon thawing/drying [the same way freezing does].

if your mushrooms are not drying fast enough, cut them smaller [e.g. into thin slices].

Yeah usually drying the mushroom out drives the bugs away.

Microwaving them sounds horrible.

Dry them as fast as possible, with lots of air flow and a little heat.

On a similar note, does anyone know of a way to drive mites out of an old polypore? I have had a huge polypore on my shelf for months, and I noticed piles of debris from where a bug decided to intrude.

Any way to gas 'em out?

those aren't mites, they are veevils. i've lost tons of dried edibles in the last year to them.

put it in the oven at a low temp for a while. that will kill them and their eggs, but will not stop them from comming back.

I like hunting with my vegan friends, they give me all their mushrooms with any grubs/worms :smile:

But I don't want them dried! I just want them to last a few days to give me time to ID and/or eat them.

Another idea: My friend used to collect worms for fishing using the following process. He cut the female plug off of an extension cord, and then attached two metal rods--one to end of the positive and one to the negative wires. One a soggy day he'd stick the rods into the ground a few feet apart and plug the other end in.

The worms would rocket out of the ground right to the surface! He would then unplug his device, walk over, and easily collect his bait.

In the same way, perhaps I could run an electric current through the mushrooms? That'll teach those little !@#$%^& to mess with my mushrooms.

do you store them refrigerated?

stoarge in a paper bag around 35f. should slow the bugs [metabolically] nearly to a stop.

So, I haven't tried this, but you could submerge them in salty water to drown them or get them to flee.  If it works drain the mushrooms well on some paper towels and store in a paper bag in the fridge as normal.

Mushrooms will absorb a small amount of water that can be easily dried off and will dry off naturally in the fridge.  What you're saying about water logging is hyperbole.  But honestly, believe what you want, I'm definitely not having this argument again.

actually many mushrooms will absorb a significant amount of water pretty quickly. you can feel otherwise, but i can watch it happen.

the ones that are the more problematic for me are the ones that are large, fleshy and come pre-waterlogged from the rain, such as large and well mature chants. those i usually cook first as they are quick to spoil.

haha that electricution idea is awesome. it would be easy for mushrooms because you can just use a damn stun gun!  but if you wanted to use a plug, all you would have to do is use the prongs instead of rods

EDIT: and does anybody else peel off the tube layer of boletes before cooking? and how are they to dry?
