So im getting some landscaping done and they brought some brown shreded brown mulch in theyre dump truck and i got an idea.
I was wondering if i pasteurized some of this would this work out for a substrate by itself or not a good idea, and has anybody ever tried using mulch as a substrate

As long as it's hardwood mulch, since most wood-loving species are hard-wood-lovers(that sounds so dirty). For cubensis, I doubt it would have any beneficial effects.

those are not species. those are varieties of the species p. cubensis.
the common button mushroom and other agaricus species will grow readily on compost, but they will also grow on straw. the other wood loving mushrooms like oyster, shiitake, reishi, maitake, and lions Mane, all prefer woody materials such as sawdust, wood chips, or sometimes straw.
since you want to grow active mushrooms, i suggest you buy some grains.

GGMM page 329 natural habitat for Cyans states that "beauty bark" or decorative mulch is a preferred habitat.
Alder, birch, cottonwood, beech, oak and Douglas fir all work well for wood lovers.
I say give it a try and let us know...
Although horse manure, straw and coir are known to work.
