Dried up and worthless, what to do?
    #1097240 - 11/30/02 12:20 AM (15 years, 8 months ago)

I have 4 mycobags that colonized 100%. I put them on a heating pad on medium heat and put a desk lamp in the box next to them to give them light for half the day. It went like this for about 2 or 3 weeks and there was no pinning so I tried cold shocking, with effects. And then I tried dunking them for 12 hours with no effects. Now they are just dried up blobs of mycelium and I haven't gotten one stinking pin out of any of them. I have used mycobags before and I have never had this problem. Can anyone help me initiate pinning, I've combed this forum and I can't find anything past dunking and cold shock. Plus I'd like to stay away from casing or anything like that since the reason I bought the mycobags was so I wouldn't have to deal with all that.

I'm afraid that maybe I killed all the mycelium by putting to much heat on them as the desk lamp can get quite hot. Any Ideas on that?

in the future, don't put a light directly in the incubator, it's almost definately too much heat. how are you trying to fruit them? how long ago was the cold shock and dunking? has the myselium started to recover?

If you can't rehydrate them, i think your screwed. I'd add some steril water and just let'em sit and see what happens.

the cold shock was like a week ago, the dunking was probably a 3 days or so ago. I dunked them in cold water cause I figured it would be the same as cold shocking. Usually I use a flourescent light to light the incubator, I switched to the desk lamp for convinience this time, it looks like it didn't work out, learned my lesson I guess.

Yes, flourescent is usually the best way to go unless you know by how many degrees you are increasing the temperature with an incandescant bulb.

learn from your mistakes and try again. this is a low cost hobby if you want it to be.

those dried chunks are worthless if they are as dry as i think they are.

They're EQs, I have a feeling that the bags may have been sterilized badly because the bottoms of the bags were all burnt and uncolonizable.

If there out of the bags Just try to dunk them. Im sure somthing will happen unless its just dead. Just try to keep the mycelium living and case it.
