trail mix
    #10657737 - 07/11/09 12:05 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

I'm planning on making my own trail mix. I just plan on putting some dried bananas, raisins, and hemp seeds together- but I have no idea.

I wonder if anyone knows some basic things to include? Any mixes you would want to share? I plan to be essentially surviving on this for 4 days, so I want to make sure I'm including all my body will need.

Look at the prepackaged ones, maybe buy a few bags of them, try them, see what elements you like best (with nutritional value constantly in mind) and mix them together and see how it tastes. I think it'd be quite trial and error.

Just make sure to get some dried fruits with various vitamins and natural sugars, lots of proteins, fats and carbohydrates and *maybe* some smarties or something to beef up the caloric content

If you've got a Costco nearby you should check them out.  They have some great buys on big bags of trail mix.  Kirkland (Costco's in-house brand) is the brand name.  Theres a few different varieties to choose from and they are a pretty good buy for the money (3 1/2 pound bags for about $10).  Outside of making my own mixes these are the best ones I've found.

The Fruit and Nut Medley is my favorite.  It contains:
Peanuts
Almonds
Walnuts
Apples
Kiwi
Mangoes
Papaya
Pineapple
Strawberries
Banana Chips
Dried Cherries
Raisins

The only downside is that most of the fruits are candied rather then just straight dried.  But I like candided fruit so its ok by me.  And then I don't feel like I'm missing out on the sweets that are lacking (M&Ms, etc).

If you want everything your body needs I would definitely make your own, it's cheaper that way anyway.
Of course if you don't have a dehydrator, it might just be easier to buy some pre-packaged ones and add whatever stuff to it.
And the hemp seed is a very good idea, since that.. has everything the body needs.

I usually make my own trail mix with a combination of nuts - usually peanuts, almonds and walnuts (all super high in good fats, protein, and some carbs)
Then a combination of dried fruit of your choice - usually go with raisins, strawberries, cranberries, banana, or something
Then sweets or chocolate of some sort. I just dump in a huge things of M&Ms
Then dump in your hemp seeds, maybe a little flax? and you are cooking with fire.

Many grocery stores have a health food section where you can buy dehydrated foods by the ounce.

Most of the gourmet organic markets have a huge wall full of stuff that you can chose from.  Just pick what you like and make a few different varieties.

Do a Google search on making granola bars too..  Lots of recipes around and they are easy to carry and eat while your walking.

Goji berries and raw cacao nibs would be great too. Goji berries are small and not too sweet, with lots of protein to say the least. Raw chocolate is bitter but energizing. Raw almonds have good fats and protein, so they are very filling. And dried pineapple (you can find at Trader Joe's) would be an awesome hiking trail mix splurge

I ended up going with dried apples, bananas and strawberries, some cashews, walnuts, pecans and one more I forgot about, a granola mix of oats, flax, hemp seeds and probably more stuff I forgot, and I went with some m&ms. It tastes good but I plan to still do some tweaking to what I add.

I found this, gonna give it a go. I find it is not too convient to eat trail mix- compared to a granola bar. Hopefully this works good, because if I can make my own granola bars I'm set for life.
