Coir recipe without gypsum
    #10971816 - 08/31/09 10:15 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I am currently living on an island and can not find gypsum.  I have one more hardware store to visit but am not getting my hopes up.  If I can not find gypsum or drywall what would be the recommended recipe.  My original plan was to use the following:

1/2 brick coir
1/2 qt vermiculite
1/2 qt spent coffee
1/2 qt gypsum

If I can not find gypsum, will the results be adequate without it in the substrate?  I read some old posts, about 5 - 7 years old, on using bone meal.  Has anybody used bone meal?  If so, how much would be recommended and how were your results?  I will post the results of my grow when complete.  Thanks for your suggestions.

To be honest, I have used just straight coir and have gotten some great results.

Have you tried Home Depot, or Lowe's? They sell dry wall, and you can usually find chunks just laying around.

Also, you can find gypsum in a bag at most flower/garden stores.

Thanks for your input.  As I mentioned I am on a small island, no Home Depot, Lowes or anything of that sort.  Everything is hard to come by.  Due to hurricanes most construction is with concrete block.  I will continue to search for gypsum and drywall but will give this grow a shot without and let you know how things go.
Thanks again.  More to come later.

That sucks...

Someone mentioned "Plaster of Paris" I think it's called at any art supply store...

What island are you on? (Curious)

I think "Plaster of Paris" sets up and gets hard.

Maybe you could mix some up let it set and then smash it up.

Not sure.
