I'm planning on sterilizing everything but he didn't mention what substrate to use. Whats a good one for casings thats easy to sterilize and easy to find? (farm supplies are readily available where I live). I was thinking that horse poo would be too hard to sterilize. Let me know what you think.

ill tell u nuke the vermiculite 2 mins. horse poo is easy to pasturize i just did a few days ago and before that another time its exelent to use as a substrate the mushies loove it and its generaly free. BUT REMEMBER THE idea IS TO PASTurize NOT STERILIZE. Becuase there is some benefitial bacteria that has to survive. Take to poo on the stove in a pillow case. take a thermometer and get to horse poo and water up to 170 degrees F. DONT EXCEED THAT TEMP. Take the poo set it in the sink let it cool and then squeeze the some of the excess water from it. take ure sterlized pan and make a 3 inch layer of horse shit on the bottom crumble your cake and then mix it thourghly through out the shit. put some foil over it poke holes in the foil to allow a limited air exchange place in an incubator at mid 80s temp and let colonize but remember the dreded overlay. when colonized correctly use verm to case it. check around for the actual horse poo tek incase i left some shit out and also to get additional info. your welcome............ I didn't take the slightest precaution to sterilizing my vermiculite which was at one point outside in the open for several days. If you do nuke vermiculite, MAKE SURE TO MOISTEN IT!!! If not you will really mess it up, it must be wet or moist at least.
What glock said about the horse poo is excellent info and it works.
P.S. Glock posted ".....check around for the actual horse poo tek incase i left some shit out and also to get additional info..."
Great pun!

I'd use a 60/40 Verm and Coco Coir casing over the plain Verm casing.
Here is the tek that I use.
Take your Coco Coir and put it in a bowl....add water til it expands. Let it sit awhile. Add your Verm to the Coco Coir.....mix it up really good. Keep adding water til its really moist.
Clean your microwave oven out with bleachy water. Spray the inside of the microwave with Lysol spray.
Put the verm/coco coir mixture into a microwavable dish...perferably a covered one. Stick it in the Oven. Nuke it for 5 minutes. Pull it out of the microwave and stirr it up good. Add water if needed. Nuke it again for another 5 minutes. Leave it in the microwave for a few hours to cool down.
After you have let the casing material cool down for a few hours. Clean your counters....Spray the air with Lysol. Wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap. Pull the dish of verm/coco coir out of the oven. If you don't have a cover on your dish....cover it up with something clean. Check the moisture of the casing material. You should only be able to squeeze a few drops out of it. You don't want it too moist.
Apply an even layer of casing material to what you are casing. Cover this with Saran Wrap or Alum foil. Put it back into the incubator or a warm place til you see the mycelium break through the casing layer....then it's time to move the casing to the fruiting chamber.
good luck!

i don't bother with any sterilization of my casing mixes. Maybe i'm making them too thin. I usually try to make them about 1/4th to 1/3rd the thickness of the substrate. anyway, i've used different formulas including peat, verm, coir, and dung. now i'm using mostly coir because it has several advantages... 1)It changes color from black to brown when dry, this lets you know it needs watering. 2)It's fluffy and the myc colonize it like mad 3)It's cheap 4)It's 100 x cleaner than verm and doesn't stick to the shroom base like verm
in addition the contrast between the casing layer the colonizing myc is really nice eye candy...here's a small picture of an isolate cased with straight coir.
another good casing mix is 2 parts coir, 1 part verm, and 1 part peat. You can adjust the ph or just leave it acidic...didn't Stamets say that acidic casing layers produced more abundant flushes?(Anno or anybody?)

IMO that casing tek uses too much humidity.
