tobacco to get rid of gnats.
    #10971308 -

so most times when people ask how to get rid of gnats, the answer is normally to let the soil dry out, or put some DE in the soil.

i have used DE and it didn't work for me.

if i soaked some tobacco in water, and let the pots of my plants sit in that for a while, will this kill the gnats?

if so, why have i not heard this as a way to eliminate gnats?

Outside? Thats pretty tough, you can prevent them by not leaving any trash out, and disperse them with an insect fogger or smoke from burning leaves, but i doubt tobacco leaves are where its at. No matter what you do to the area you want free of gnats is always going to be surrounded by other gnats that can get in there.

How big is your garden? when i get them in the house all i have to do is leave a fan on for a couple days, they are too small to handle the wind currents.

Shit, thats easy. You just need to take some time. point fans directly at where the gnats are. The air has to be disturbed enough that they can't fly. This should take care of alot of the problem. I wish i could do that with a mushroom grow. That might just take care of things, just remember to water more frequently.

A fan is a great idea. Try using neem oil, spray it on the surface of the soil once or twice a week after watering. Water early in the day so the soil surface has enough time to dry, this stops the damp, stagnant environments they love.

I wouldn't use that tobacco idea either. Tobacco is ok as a foliar spray for pests but if you mix it with water and use it as a drench you run a big risk of burning your plants.

what plants are we talking about here?

letting the surface of the soil dry out, add a layer of DE and those sticky fly paper traps always worked well for me.

it's not a quick fix, it does take a few weeks for all the adults to get shredded by the DE.

are you giving it enough time?

another thing you can do is to scrape off the top layer of soil and ditch it outside then add a top dressing of fresh soil, or totally repot the plants into fresh soil.

yeah i've tried re-potting, i've tried sticky fly paper traps, tried DE.

i think i might just try that fan trick.

oh, and the plants are mostly pereskiopsis, and a couple of water loving carnivorous plants

Have you tried cups of Vinegar?

That seemed to help my problem a good deal.

i want to eliminate the gnats, not reduce the numbers.

i find that traps just keep the numbers down, but they are still able to breed.

Vinegar pretty much took care of my problem, no lie.

Mix that with DE and traps, they should be  :dead:

It's just vinegar in a cup, non-intrusive or harmful, and chances are you shouldn't need to buy anything (If you have some apple cider vinegar lying around)

Give it a try, you've got nothing to lose

Most gnat problems IME stem from poor hygiene ie: lack of air flow, dirty grow area, over watering or poor draining soil or sick plants.

Fix this by improving airflow, possibly changing your water schedule so soil surface dries quickly. Clean area and check plant root zone for rotting roots as this is what the larvae love to feed on, decayed roots and organic matter. Using an Oscillating fan works great as the adult flies cannot fly with the swirling current of air, this prevents them from landing on the soil and laying eggs.

I have never used the vinegar trick but if Cactusdan says it works, I believe him. It wouldn't hurt on trying this out either.

Mix a few garlics in a blender with 2 cups
water, then filter the resulting fluid through
a coffee filter and pour resulting filtrate
into a either a mist bottle or sprayer.

They hate it. They'll eventually disregard
any breeding grounds established in favor of
substantially less garlicy-smelling locations.
