August 29, 1956
Bill Wilson, founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, took LSD for the first time
William Griffith Wilson, also known as Bill Wilson or Bill W., was the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) a fellowship of support groups world-wide dedicated to helping alcoholics achieve sobriety.
British radio commentator Gerald Heard introduced Bill W to Aldous Huxley and British psychiatrists Humphrey Osmond and Abram Hoffer. Humphrey and Osmond were working with schizophrenic and alcoholic patients at a Canadian hospital.
Bill joined with Heard and Huxley and first took LSD in CA on August 29, 1956. Medically supervised by psychiatrist Sidney Cohen of the LA VA hospital, the LSD experiments occurred well prior to the "hippie era" of the late 1960's.
Among those invited to experiment with LSD (and who accepted) were Nell Wing, Father Ed Dowling, Sam Shoemaker and Lois Wilson. Marty M and other AA members participated in NY (under medical supervision by a psychiatrist from Roosevelt Hospital).
Bill is quoted as saying: "It is a generally acknowledged fact in spiritual development that ego reduction makes the influx of God's grace possible. If, therefore, under LSD we can have a temporary reduction, so that we can better see what we are and where we are going — well, that might be of some help. The goal might become clearer. So I consider LSD to be of some value to some people, and practically no damage to anyone. It will never take the place of any of the existing means by which we can reduce the ego, and keep it reduced."
Bill thought of LSD as something of a miracle substance and continued taking it well into the ‘60s. As he approached his 70th birthday, he developed a plan to have LSD distributed at all AA meetings nationwide. A few years later the Federal government made the point moot by making the drug illegal.

AA is a bunch of bullshit. The 12-step program is terrible.
I believe in self-love and responsibility. Obligation to live one's life and live with the decisions that one makes. Fix your life for yourself or for something greater than yourself (family, offspring, dreams, etc.)

AA would undeniably be better with LSD, rather than the 50 packs of cigarettes per day they blow through!

Some of you can say all the shit you want about how horrible AA is and how religion blah blah blah. First of all, if you went through any program you would know they are not religious and they even say so at the start and end of EVERY meeting. The are spiritual. Which is WAY fucking different, and when it really comes down to it...why do you even give a fuck? Here is a program who has saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of people who have done one of the most challenging things anyone can every do and all you have to say is that it's evil, and bullshit, and the religion side fake stupid blah blah blah. Well fuck that. It's harmless to you, it turns people's lives around, and they voluntarily do it, so fuck you leave them alone. That's all we want with our mushroom and drug use is to be left alone untouched by our own government and get our message out, that's all AA and NA are doing to so shut the fuck up.

I give a fuck because I think that it can be done differently, and better. I've sat in on a number of AA meetings, and the general atmosphere is just nauseating. There's lots of talk about how people were "made" to do this or that by this or that substance. How "the drugs and alcohol" did this to them.
AA reinforces this belief by insisting to people IN THE VERY FIRST TENANT that they aren't CAPABLE of doing what they need to do without some form of outside help.
Outside help is very powerful and can oftentimes mean the difference, but AA fosters this notion that the "addict in recovery" is utterly helpless, some mass of flesh and bone and desires, lacking human restraint.
There isn't enough developing of the mind in AA, not enough imparting of positive ideas and ideals.

My dad told me he had an extremely alcoholic friend who went to AA one day then quit alcohol cold turkey and never went back claimng the only motivation he needed was seeing how they are such pussies.
Looks like AA helps everyone in a different way
