Risks of Growing
    #10964001 - 08/29/09 11:14 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

When considering the fact that the cultivation of magic mushrooms is a third degree felony; one must consider the risks/rewards of growing. By growing illegal mushrooms one is risking prison time (especially with a previous record).
My question is: Although mushroom cultivation is illegal, does law enforcement proactively search and prosecute cultivators? Whenever I read the headlines on this website, I always read about Marijuana, Cocaine, Heroine busts, etc... But I never really read about "Mushroom Busts". Does anyone know anybody or have any references to mushroom related busts?

I'm fairly certain Shroomery doesn't advocate growing anything illegal in your area.

Not everyone who posts here grows things that are illegal. Not to mention that this belongs in another forum.
Believe it or not, there are legal and edible mushrooms. Either way, it is a great hobby for the bored and disenfranchised.
But yes, it will get you in trouble so don't do it.

Czo: Where did I ever imply that the Shroomery advocates any illegal activity?

gngsteroflove: Its nice to see you know how to read.

Anyone care to share anything relevant to the original question?

When strokes talk like this on other forums; the answer is simple.

Use Google.

Are they likely to lock you up and throw the key away for a jar? Probably not, wanna push your luck with enough to look like a supplier?
Cause that's where the main bite in the laws sits.

Keep it small, don't sell, don't tell... and people wouldn't know any more than they know about your porn stash.

Growing mushrooms is a lot safer than growing pot. There's no smell, 90% of your equipment can be bought with cash at a hardware store or Walmart, and it's easy enough to keep everything locked in a closet or back room.

People fuck up and get caught when they tell all their 'friends' or when they sell mushrooms to some high school douchebag who loses their shit, goes to the hospital, and snitches out the seller to the cops.

My impression is that law enforcement does not proactively search cultivators; they are more concerned with cocaine, marijuana, and meth to focus time and energy into catching someone who grows 3 cakes for personal use. Illegal mushroom use is inherently low-key; few people use them, very few people die under their influence, the industry is small and not many users partake frequently, thus making them a poor target for law enforcement publicity. The public is more scared of the major 'epidemic' drugs, and those are the busts they want to hear about.

Furthermore, cops are more interested in headline grabbing/large result busts: lots of money/drugs being found, relation to public fears, major suppliers, and ties to organized crime. Mushroom busts do not achieve these elements, and the major busts cannot be achieved if resources (men and time) are spent browsing the internet to look for minor busts of the illegal mushroom nature.

Almost every time you hear of a bust, it was a mammoth operation which crossed state lines, there are other drugs involved, or the the person was nervous during a traffic stop - none of which apply to the home grower. However, if the small grower is caught telling or selling, the police have an obligation to act upon the low fruit dangling from the tree.

If you want to learn about busts, search posts (in the shroomery news service) with keywords "arrested" and "mushroom", "lab", etc.

Anything that's illegal is illegal. Period. There's no looking the other way. Being busted is all going to depend on high quiet you can keep your cultivation operation. I'm sure if you go parading around telling your friends, family, neighbors about it--you're going to get pinched.

Also, consider the QUANTITY you produce. Be careful in that regard because you may be convicted on attempt to sell if you mass produce where as if you only grew for personal consumption, they may only slap you on the wrists.
