A former banker has said farewell to the remote island he had marooned himself on in a radical attempt to stop smoking. Castaway smoker ends 30-a-day habit

Geoff Spice spent most of August as a castaway on the uninhabited island of Sgarabhaigh in the Outer Hebrides, far from the temptation of cigarettes.

Mr Spice, 56, who used to be a senior banker at NM Rothschild in London, hoped the solitude would help him give up his 30-a-day habit.

And it has appeared to have been a success with Mr Spice, who lives in Surrey, confident enough to leave the island a week ahead of schedule.

He spent his time on the island sleeping in a tent.

Sgarabhaigh is owned by conservationist Dave Hill.

Mr Hill said on Wednesday night: "Geoff left the island at lunchtime.

"He has succeeded and has survived the rigours of some of the worst weather the islands have suffered this summer.

"He feels that he has got a good grip on his smoking cravings and he has experienced the spirituality of three and a half weeks on his own in one of the most beautiful, if wet and windy, parts of Scotland."
