I just realized on the pictures of contaminated straw, you had them resting on a page with text mentioning contamination.  Very sneaky.

Temps are far from optimal, dipping into the low 60's at night. I have no way of controlling temps right now but I'm saving up for a space heater so I can keep the incubation and growing areas up to temperature.
I'm fairly certain that if I had optimal temps it would be done colonizing by now.

A point that might be worth mentioning is that next time you spawn make sure that you add a light final layer of the spawn on top of the straw.  If the surface colonizes fast then that provides additional protection from contams.    Don't take it from me... I was told this by an antelope.

Just wanted to jump in here and give my 2 cents!

I was looking at you pics of the spawn, and I would suggest perhaps letting those jars get completely colonized, from the pics, it looked like you had quite a lot of open rye grain. In my experience with bulk, this is always where it goes wrong, the rye getting contaminated.

With all of the grain totally colonized you stand a much better chance of fighting of contams!

I didn't use very much spawn in comparison to how much straw was there, but I did add a final "light" layer to the top, but it kind of just fell through the cracks in the straw. Next time I'll be chopping my straw quite a bit smaller so that I can compact it better though.

I'm telling ya theres somethign wrong with my camera and whites, but trust me those jars were fully colonized. They were even sitting for an extra half week before I used them. After I shake my jars they almost always look WAY less colonized, but I know better

Definately. I mix thoroughly and then compact tightly and then sprinkle the last layer on. But the straw does have to be pretty short for that to work well.

Nix - I use straw a lot, and have used black plastic and bricks to compact the first few days of incubation. I never remove the black plastic (not even a little corner) until I see myc. peeking through the holes in the black plastic. My bulk straw projects seem to do best if I just leave them alone while colonizing. I use 2 bricks in each box, move the bricks around in the box, so all areas are compressed over the first 3-5 days, then remove the bricks and leave the plastic in place. Check every couple days, and the little white peekaboos will lyk when it's time to apply your casing.
Also - I live in brick and it's damned hard to keep regulated temps in the winter. I put a heating pad on low under my incubating boxes, stack them up, put a blanket on top, and rotate every day or two, so that they get turns being closest to the heat. When they're ready to fruit, I just let them fruit in regular household temps (thermostat set at 68-70). I can't remember which strains HATED the cooler temps, but the Orissa's and Florida's are seeming to like these temps just fine. Matter of fact, my Orissa's always sucked or failed completely during the warmer months, and they are my prized strain right now.
If it really makes you crazy to leave the plastic in place, I've done a few boxes lately that did just as well, even though I used a different compression method. I layered spawn and straw a few times and pressed down hard everywhere. Then I put one more layer of spawn and a 1/2 inch layer of scotts/verm mix. The scotts mix is a little heavier, and helps to hold the straw down. It seems to take a little longer to colonize, but that could be due to the cooler weather. If your lid is plastic, you can see the progress without taking a risk of introducing contams until time to case. Waiting for bulk spawn is just like waiting for jars. The less you F with them, the better the results. ymmv

*updated*

Babyshroom, I just found out through my new pie straw pans that if I chop up the straw enough I don't need to pack it down at all. I'm not gonna even look at my straw pans for a week until I know they gotta be fully colonized.
To get rid of heating problems I got a $100 space heater which regulates temperature in the room between 74-76f but I could set it all to way up to 85f if I wanted. Gonna have to get a second one for the colonization room some time in the future.

Nixxon - you are so right. I was using craft straw previously and treated it as "pre-cut". I switched to a real bail a while back, and I cut it by hand (yuck) down to 1-3 inch pieces. It compacts quite well at that size, and I think that's why the scotts/verm mix is working as well as my old plastic/brick method.
I envy you the space heater. I've already decided to purchase one, but since I'm in Florida (very short winter), I'm determined to wait for clearance prices on heaters. They should be going on clearance in another month - we already have spring clothes in our stores here. That heater is going to help you a lot. Good luck and keep us updated.

Tks Zed
First flush is long gone, and I should be expecting the beggining of the second flush soon, that is if the rotting shrooms at the bottom of the bin don't contaminate the whole lot first. I allready started anew bin, using pretty much the same method strain etc etc, that are colonizing really well due to temp control and being chopped up and packed down. I also used about twice as much rye grain as well. The pie pans of straw I started alil while ago are done colonizing the casing and are now in the fruiting chamber too. With the new straw bin I taped a double layer of black plastic garbage bag underneith the entire bin to stop light from reaching the bottom and sides. Learn from my mistakes I do :P
