I've an inveterate scam artist friend who pilfers products from major retail stores (think WalMart, Staples, Barnes & Noble) and gifts them to people – absolutely free. He does it from some ideological reason. While he's not keen on setting up e-shops for his merchandise to be distributed, I could tell you all his ways of operation so that you too can be up to your necks in free shit, theoretically. It does require some expensive (>$4,000), albeit readily purchasable, technology/electronics to get started with.
There's practically zero risk of getting busted and anything you see is ripe for the taking with a little personality and a lot of sagacity.

Does this forum permit talk encouraging criminal acts? If the administrators of this place are phlegmatic and disinterested enough, I'll tell ya all that I know.

I'm sure this thread itself has quite a few criminal suggestions for getting 'free' stuff, so I think your good. I have no interest in doing anything criminal, I'm just interested to hear how it works, I used to know someone who got similar electronics all the time but probably much sloppier.

PMs would be unfair to the other members. So long as it's legal to divulge how some of these things are done, the information should be accessible to everybody with the interest to learn about it.
My friend, whom I had alluded to earlier, is a unique thief in that he is not motivated by kleptomania, monetary exigency, subsistence, or shits and giggles. One of the ways in which a retail store’s products have been taken is through the procedurally simplistic, essentially risk free, and unwontedly gainful (and, to be honest, definitely not unheard of. Zoklet is to thank for my posting) “barcoding” scam. To illustrate, it’s, in essence, a barcode exploit wherein the barcode assigned to a relatively cheap item (say, a $0.95 packet of Trident gum) is duplicated and surreptitiously appended to a relatively expensive item (say, a $130.00 microwave). Afterward, you approach the register (caveat lector: never attempt the self-checkout lines, because they’re capable of weighing the product and that could throw the whole thing out the window and have you waste your time pettifogging with the fuzz over how you were totally unaware of the tampered merchandise, etc). When you get to the register, comport yourself normally and you can get out safely. Return the item for cash for maximum reward. Rinse and repeat.
So then, how does one get the barcodes? What are the requisite materials to make them convincing enough to bypass those indomitable hoards of half-retarded cashiers, semi-competent rentacops and CCTV cameras monitored by the legally blind?
I.Find a UPC database/generator to acquire barcodes like the following: http://www.upcdatabase.com/ http://www.barcoding.com/upc/ http://www.terryburton.co.uk/barcodewriter/generator/ etc.
II. Next, get a good quality printer. Any will do, really. The preferential printer for meticulous people with the dough to spend would be a thermal label printer identical to the one in the link below: http://www.amazon.com/Zebra-LP2844-Thermal-Label-Printer/dp/B000H33MBE This website is exquisite and has many thermal printers: http://www.barcodesinc.com/cats/printing.htm
III. Now, if you do not have a thermal printer, buy some Avery 8162 Inkjet Labels 1-1/3" x 4" paper like in the link below: Avery® 8162 White Inkjet Address Labels with Easy Peel®, 1-1/3" x 4", 350/Box
If you were shrewd enough and just adore a perfect print, you've already gotten the thermal printer presumably, so the paper you'd need is like this: 20 Rolls of 250 4x6 Direct Thermal Zebra 2844 ZP-450 Shipping Labels
I suppose that's all that there is to it. If you want to know a magic trick to impress your friends with by transforming a $1 bill into a $100 bill before their very eyes, I could put together another post. Or, as some magical grand finale, I could expound on the ways in which $100 bills can be made out of thin air with only some computer software, a motley of tweaked electronics of an amorphous legality, some special chemicals, a secret blend of fiber paper, and holograms.

Yeah, i can see the dumb checkout gal beep the microwave and a few items and then sees the total is $10 for all those goodies and never bats an eye. She looks at the mw and never wishes she could get one for 79 cents like that shopper. She does not call security, they do not check the cameras and see you putting the sticker on and you are not hauled off to jail. It all works perfectly.
Now if you were getting a $10 small item for 79 cents it might fly. Or... not

My apologies, but your experience with barcoding is what, precisely?
To be sincere, I've done this, my friends have done this, the people in the below weblinks have done this:

Quote:
http://www.phillyburbs.com/news/local/courier_times_news/two-accused-in-bar-code-scam/article_64feb004-e080-5610-b647-01e28e7effff.html
Quote:
The scam allowed them to buy things like Bose computer speakers having a retail value of $249.99 for $29.99.

Quote:
One notable purchase was a $250 Lego Millennium Falcon set for a mere $50.
http://scams.wikispaces.com/Bar+Code+Bust
Quote:
A Victorian man, Edward Imre Podolak, has been arrested for allegedly attempting this swindle all over Adelaide. The man managed to swindle TVs, microwaves, portable hot water systems and fishing gear by swapping the bar codes. He was busted while trying to buy a $700 coffee machine for $30. Podolak said outside the court, ""Everybody just keeps taking from the smaller people -- they don't care about the small people...I am just trying to make ends meet so I don't lose my home and my family."
http://www.zoklet.net/bbs/showthread.php?t=896
Quote:
I have found that as far as cashiers go, they don't usually car if it comes up wrong, and women are usually better targets. One time I was coding and was really cocky about it. I had coded a few binders as papermate pens for $1.51. I went through the checkout to the guy who scanned ten fivestar binders through and it came out for like 16 or so dollars, he looked at the screen and it said papermate pens, he paused and then just shrugged and collected my money LOL. Just goes to show how much people care. PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT CODING IS TO ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS PAY IN CASH.
You are talking from a position of zero experience, and this concept is most likely entirely novel to you and was unknown prior to seeing this thread. Never underestimate the potential to exploit human stoicism and dullness.

The standard for most stores is that the cashiers should just allow anything. They can question it etc. But bottom line is that if they can't prove otherwise the store has done a mistake and they should let it pass.
If they see you put on the bar codes that is another thing and they can catch you for that.

Tell us anything legal that you might know ^_^
Anything legal that I can collect just a little cash out of is always good to know.
Edit:
I remembered a couple of years ago, I read about some guy that decided to beg for free stuff from companies.
He brought letters and stamps for a total of 100 dollars (if I remember correctly) and his goal was to earn money from it. All he did was sending letters to companies headquarters and asking nicely if he could get some. I don't remember if he made a profit out of it, but he did get some free stuff, especially small companies, that sells consumable goods, and just want to spread their brand and their products were quite willingly to give away free stuff, after all if you like their product you are likely to buy it from them again. Now since every company have internet emails you wont have to pay for letters and stamps and can do it without any cost, if you get anything at all you will profit from it.

If I was a cashier and saw that it was 79 cents I'd call my manager over. That's why if I was going to pull the scam I'd buy a couple of big items with it so that the total price looks plausible and then return the big items leaving me with the free microwave.

I wasn't expecting such an inquiry. I don't know of any legal ways outside toiling in the mud with the employed (ugh!). Theoretically, I could have some merchandise that you might be keen on purchasing. It would cost a staggeringly low 5% of its resale value, so therein lies one way to legal wealth. New TVs, about thirteen MacBook Pro MC976LL/A 15.4 inch laptops, a recently acquired Nikon D7000, a Sony Alpha NEX-7, one of those fancy Zenith Academy Tourbillion Quatieme Perpetual watches that retail in the mid-thousounds, about a dozen Apple iPhone 5s and six HP ENVY 15.6 inch ultra-thin laptops, combined with an an assortment of other high-valued items. All packaged, pristine, and acquired 100% by the book. Anything listed here is going for a mere 5% of its retail value. If only we weren't discussing a theoretical scenario and I really did have all this...you and I would be in haut monde and well-moneyed quite fast.

Yeah I had a coworker that did this exact same thing, would swap barcodes to return items vack to the stores at higher values. This works especially well with expensive hard drives such as solid state hard drives.

you gotta be pretty drug fucked or retarded to operate that profession and not rely on the CUNT methodology, Cash Upfront No Tick.
I think the legal ones here require you to pay for ur planned amount of time, than if u go over they will let ya know and if u wann add more or just finnish up. Honestly cant tell ya howthey operate, never had that experience yet.
