coffee filters and micropore tape enough?

so im about to start my first  batch  of wbs jars and i was wondering if having micropore tape over the holes and having a coffee filter on top of that with a rubber band enough?? thanks

I use straight micropore tape, not even any coffee filters. I PC jars with micropore tape over holes and tinfoil over lids (tinfoil is necessary!)

when going to inoculate, remove tin foil wipe down the micropore tape covering the holes with an alcohol swab and inject straight through the micropore tape, then put a new piece of micropore right overtop, no need to remove the old one

I learned it from a post fooman made

sweet, thanks guys. well i  just found outi gotta run to thee post office tomorrrow anyways to change my  addrss so i might try to get some  tyvek . what do i do, just ask for some?

What I like to do for grain is to use lid with two hole, 1 with RTV on it for a self healing inoculation point, and an other with micropore tape for Gaz exchange. So that way I dont even need to mess with the tape for innoculating my jar

Make a dry verm layer like with PF tek. Just take a cup of verm, put some cling wrap on top and chuck it into a microwave for 10 mins and load it into your jars in a glove box.

Couldn't hurt...

I have been told before that coffee filters will NOT be sufficient in keeping contams out.  The coffee filters were not exactly meant to keep contaminants out of the coffee pot or anything.  If that is all you have I suggest doubling coffee filters.  But micropore tape is good too.

Cofee filter are kinda useless anyway... You only need some tyvek or micropore tape over the ole and thats it. You may use cofee filter as a dust cover but thats it.

This is not a good  idea (I've never seen it done, so I don't know how well it would actually work) but a dry verm barrier as your filter on WBS jars wouldn't work well because the jars need to be 3/4 of the way full so you can shake the grain

the grain needs to be shaken to distribute moisture and then to help with colonization as well

leave dry verm barrier for the pf tek

invest in some micropore tape...or if you really wanna get down to business go grab yourself some RTV and tyvek

it aint that expensive  and it works amazingly :wink:
