Need Some Advice
    #1094271 - 11/28/02 05:38 PM (14 years, 15 days ago)

Ok I have 5 jars (BRF) that are about 3/4 colonized and they are kind of dry. Is there any way i can get some moisture in them without messing them up?

The safest thing to do is to leave them alone, but if you are certain that they are too dry you can inject a couple cc's of sterile water into them. This has worked for me in the past.

Some jars do appear dry but have enough water content in them for growth. I suppose you could inject them with some sterile water if you wanted but you could be increasing your risk of contams entering the jar. If its the bottoms of the jars that aren't colonizing I've found that if you turn the jars bottoms up and tap them into your hand so the substrate pulls away from the bottom of the jar it seems to promote faster growth.

It may only look dry. Wait to see if they finish colonization.

I find that the latter stages of colinization can be painfully slow, so much so that I took two cakes, cutting away the uncolonized part of the one which was about eighty percent finished (really just seemed to stop at that point), and casing them...oooh baby, they started coming up yesterday, just one shroom, and off i went to Thanksgiving dinner....came home several hours later to find what must be fifty or sixty, at least, coming up. So maybe just cutting away the uncolonized parts with a sterilized knife and casing would be the most worthwhile way to go. You could do two nice casings off of those 5 jars....just a thought
