I don't have the slurry anymore...it went down the drain at the last racking. I can get more of it though, so I'm not worried about that :wink:

Hah, that's awesome. 

Do you have the specific recipe you used?  I'm traveling right now, but I'm gonna be in one place for the next couple of months and I have a fair amount of white wine yeast on me (the packets are so small, i figured "why not?").  I bet I could get a jar of local honey straight from the Czech source through my host farmers. 

I'm actually about 2.5 weeks into the process of making about 0.75 gallons of blackberry wine.  I would've made more, but that's all i was able to harvest off their bushes.  I'm gonna try to harvest some more and trek out into the wild to see if i can find some wild blackberries to add to the second batch, which'll most likely be about the same size as the first.

why not make some mead while i'm at it?

Well I didn't go by a recipe for this one...it was too easy!

Here's what I used:
-approx 800ml clover honey
-water to make 1 gallon
-1 tsp yeast nutrient
-1 pack champagne yeast (5g)

I say "approx 800ml honey" because I wanted to get a very dry mead that is about 12% abv. I used a hydrometer for this. I put about 750ml of honey and enough water to make a gallon in a bucket, then I checked the sg of it with the hydrometer and added more honey until I was at about 1.090 sg (to make it 12%). Then I poured the whole mess into a 1gal carboy, added the nutrient and yeast, and slapped on an airlock!

I made sure to leave enough headroom so it wouldn't foam up into the airlock during fermentation. I topped it off with fresh water at the first racking (it wasn't much, so it didn't affect the abv much).

alright, sounds pretty friggin' fool-proof.  though i must ask, how much of a necessity do you think the glass is?  i had a bitch of a time finding the one glass carboy i'm using for the blackberry wine.  i don't think i'll be able to find another.  do you think plastic would completely kill the taste of the mead?

also, no homebrew shops around.  so i improvised the airlock by using a condom with a hole pricked in it (an idea i got from a hard cider thread here at the shroomery).  again, d'you figure that'll be too much of a problem?

Wont be too much of a problem...though I've heard that the rubber from the condom can add some "flavor" to the brew.

Hell yeah man, mead is awesome! I'll never forget my first experience with it. I went camping with some friends in La Plata canyon, during a nearly full....if not full moon. I took 11 drops of the cleanest, sweetest, most delectably fluffy L that I've ever touched to my tongue & gave a couple to one of my friends. (The rest just drank.)

It was an absolutely wonderful night & once the moon went down, the stars came out.  I cracked the bottle of mead during this time & shared it with the one friend still awake (the other dosee :grin:). Let me tell you, I will never, ever forget the smooth deliciousness as the mead entered my mouth & slid down my gullet. By the time my friend went to bed there was about a quarter of the bottle left. Still quite high on the LSD I stayed up, hanging with the dogs for what I believe was the most spectacular sunrise of my life & I killed the bottle.


Ever since then it's been true :heartpump:, though I reserve it for special occasions.

The mead that I had on that wonderful night was from the Rocky Mountain Meadery, and it was the King Arthur, for those of you familiar with that brand.  I'd love to make my own mead, wine and beer someday for sure.....I gotta put that on my list.

Hell yah head is the shit and easy to make.

Its funny that this drink most associated with hard ass vikings is so sweet and smooth.

Best mead I had was made by a friend and sat for about a year before opening. So smooth and tasty.

There besides the honey water and yeast you can also put all sorts of spices in there to change the flaver.
