stealth camp

I am going to try to camp in a state park/forest for a week in mid to late september undetected. the park closes at sundown, and no camping aloud. state cops check every night. i've been hassled more than once. dumb idea? yeah, am i doing it anyway? you betchah, i only have 2 concerns, hunting season, and i'll be having a lot of mush, and green with me, so if i get pinched its more than some sort of trespass charge. i plan to park my vehicle at a friends house than pack in from there. it's all forest no streets or houses and only a few miles or so in. i want to make a base camp then day hike in a different direction each day, and get messed up at night. so what do you think? good ideas/suggestions and constructive criticism welcome

if it were me I'd bring all my camo gear, set up ur campsites at high altitudes where no one wants to hike and completely off trail and mark your location with a gps unit or something so when you wonder off after setting up you can find your way back... also only have small fires enough to cook food... how big of a wilderness is this? state cops will probably only check trailheads, and will only search if there are stray cars parked there....

yes i plan to hide my camp well, camo, fires- small and only at night, i made two penny stoves i'll use in day time. and i believe your correct about the cops. i don't have a gps but that is a good idea. the park is only about a dozen square miles or so.

Stealth camping really isn't that difficult. I guess it's a bigger deal in some parts of the country. Hell I did it in Gatlinburg TN, and was only a half mile out of town.
Just don't be stupid, don't make a lot of racket, and if you encounter people do head back to your campsite. Also make sure to use 'Leave No Trace' practices.
Have fun

yeah, its definitely big enough to get lost in. i'm just worried about hunters, i think late september is bow, or black powder season so this should be fun. i will also be hunting, but i'll be useing snares and dead falls, as well as a fishing pole, i might even bring pellet gun to, just in case i can't snare anything

this is my little mess kit, its an old boy scout kit i believe, i filled a Dristan bottle with bleach to sanitize drinking water when boiling is not an option (8 drops per gallon)and let it sit for a half hour. hand sanitizer, i made a mixed spice jar with my favorite seasonings. reading in this forum i discovered the the penny stove, awesome little device, so i did alil research and i made 1 out of 12 oz heinekin cans, it burns for 35 minutes, and boils a quart of water in 6 minutes. then i made one out of fosters oil cans, it is wider so it works better when using a frying pan, (more even) it burns half the time on the same amount of fuel (50ml) of denatured alcohol, and no smoke at all

i found that little nipper bottles are perfect for 1 burn 50 mls. i filled up some to take with me

this is a hydration pack witch i'll be using on my day exploring,it has pockets and webbing to carry other stuff i'll need like my penny stove and lunch. and the back pack i got from ebay 20bucks + 12 shipping not bad its in perfect working order other than its a medium so i'll have ta rework it a little cuz i'm a big dude. i chose an external frame so i can easily ad stuff to it like my toiletry/first aid pack and mess kit pack.

okay, it's getting close, so i decided to make my water filter today, very simple, took like 5 minutes. i took a 2 foot piece of 2 inch electrical conduit, put polyfill in one end, caped it with a 2 inch PVC cap that i drilled a 1/4inch hole in, filled the conduit up with activated carbon to within 4 or 5 inches from the top, put more polyfill on top, and another cap, now when i go to use it, all i have to do is remove the cap without the hole, and pour stream, or pond water threw it, and then boil the water, and that's it, nice clean water. 2 foot may be abit overkill but better safe then sorry

sorry about the bad pics

You shouldn't have a problem. I've stealth camped alot in cities and forests/public lands.
Infact i stealth camped with my motorcycle inside Yosemite national park last month + all around Tahoe.
Lots of Rangers, but if you ditch your vehicle i suspect you'll be fine. Just keep a low profile.
Hope you have fun!

okay, i'll tell ya about my little adventure, i'll just tell ya i took way to much stuff with me, by the time i got to where i could set up camp, i thought i was having a heart attack.
here is one of the ponds i past on the way

here is pics of my tent

i found some flat stones and made a little fireplace, it worked out pretty good, i only had two wood fires, the rest of the time i used my penny stove on the nice flat base stone of the fireplace

the forest smelled like mycelium, and mushrooms, here are some of my finds this one was stood out like a light it the night.
a trusted identifier told me this is Amanita bisporigera and is deadly poisonous...
a few others

i partied way too hard the first night.
i'll share more later

i'm definitely going to do it again, maybe in a few weeks, if not, then next year.
after i made the fire place, i celebrated way too hard, i didn't eat that day, i was smoking, drinking vodka, and dancing around my little fire till i passed out, it was only around 8 pm. i woke up to rain on my face, i had to get my gear out of the rain, i had to close the window on the tent, i had to cover the big vents on the roof, and go back to sleep. when i got up in the morning to take a leak i was still groggy, it was still dark out, but i could see a light way down in the woods where i saw a tree stand the day before, so now i knew i had to be careful.
more later

here's more
i packed in my water, the hydration pack was two liters, a WW2 canteen one quart, and two 20 oz ice tea bottles full of water, so i figured i would be good for a couple days, WRONG i washed the hydration pack bladder out before i filled it but when it come time to drink the water it was undrinkable it tasted like plastic and chemicals, so i said to myself "i got this covered" with a big hung over grin i put the water through my trusty home made water filter, another learning experience, the water came out black from the carbon. i should have put a couple layers of sand in the filter. so i ended up filtering pond water through a bandanna, then boiling it. i could have saved my self 20 pounds or more on the way in.

more of my idiot safari later

i woke up one morning and i went off to find a cliff i knew was there some where. i ended up getting all turned around and ended up here. so i took a couple of pics.
it doesn't look it but it drops off pretty good. so i went off exploring some more. never did find it, but i did get some good exercise, and had fun exploring. now i have a good idea where the cliff is and how to get there, so next time i will find it on the first day (i hope) and set up camp on the cliff. i really want to get a pic from there.
all in all i had fun, next time i will take a lot less crap with me, and not get so obliterated the first night.

a little more since it's so dead in hear.
i forgot to mention the second night around dinner time. i just took my beans off the fire stood up and turned around and i saw movement, it was two dogs and a hiker, i don't think he saw me but it took me by surprise, if it was the night before he would have smelled my fire, or the dogs would have smelled me, but the wind was coming from north instead of the south like on the first night.
i'll tell ya, after getting so screwed up the first night i felt sick for days after. i still smoked my green but i didn't feel up to the shrooms i brought with me. so next time i'll ether Waite to drink or not drink at all. my entire time in the bush i opened three cans of food, vegetable soup, beans, and alphabet vegetable soup, i didn't finish any of it, and ate nothing else, every thing i ate went right through me, even the water, and the instant coffee, thank god i brought a full roll of tp, and hand sanitizer hand sanitizer

Yeah, you'll enjoy yourself more if you focus on exploring/cooking/camp set up/time alone rather than getting obliterated.
Although psychedelics and camping go together well, it takes some nerve to take them alone in the forest...
That's a bridge i haven't crossed yet.

i agree, i think my problem was i had too much time to think about it, and my load kept growing, not only that i brought like two gallons of water with me, and my tent is 9x9x6 dome, it's all i have but i love it and wouldn't use any other if i had the choice. i also brought like three changes of clothes. caned food also weighs a lot. bow saw, sheet rock hatchet, rope, i brought all kids of stuff. i guess i wanted to be ready for anything

Hey man, no worries, i know how that is.
I remember the first time i went hitch hiking i had piles of stuff hanging off my already large pack.
Same with cycle touring - took waaay too much stuff when i was in the US.
This year, a friend his girlfriend, and i were doing a 35km'ish walk to a lake, and i brought 7L of water, and they brought 2 between them. They ran out, with plans of getting to the lake at the end of the hike that night, where-as it was planned that we were doing it over 2 days.
Needless to say, carrying 7L on ones shoulders, with camp gear. Is brutal.
I was extremely bitchy + mad at them for forcing me to walk 35km's with such a load, towards the last few kms.

I've been guilty of sherpa-ing a 50 lbs pack into some areas but usually shoot for less than 1/4 my body weight including water.
I usually go through my pack when I get back home with all the gear on the floor then separating out whatever I didn't use or need. Then either make a list of what gear was really handy or just pack the necessary items up again for the next trip.

go for it, i like backpacking but it is a 3 or 4 hour drive to get to any decent trails. So every once in a while, my friend and i will head out to our city and camp on one of the farmer's land, we practice no trace, but it is a lot of fun, and a good getaway for a night

i agree, the hammock is a nice thing, but if it rains you are stuck in the hammock, not me, my big tent is great, i can stand up in it, move around, and all my gear fits nicely in it, i can even do crafts, and exercise in it if it rains for a week,i wont give it up, to each his own, good luck on your adventures, i plan on going again as soon as it warms up

yes I fucking my hammock. I have an extended rain fly over my hammock, so even if it's pouring, I can still spread it all out and have plenty of space under it. Use my hammock as a seat too.
Only thing I hate about it is camping in the cold. I can't afford an underquilt yet so I have to lug this bulky foam pad to put under me and it does the job of insulating.. but it's not as comfortable as the naked hammock, and it doesnt cover all the sides so sometimes my shoulders will come off the pad or something and get cold spots. Can't wait to get an underquilt... that effectively turns that hammock into a warm cocoon and nest and shelter all in one!

It's ideal for stealth camping IMO, as well as leave no trace. I admit I do enjoy some of the more roomier comforts of a tent, you can do thing in them you can't do in a hammock, things like have multiple people, play games in them, etc. But you can do things in a hammock you can't dream of in a tent.. camping over a creek for example, but I wouldn't dream of using a hammock in arctic conditions. So I guess it depends on the application.
Tents pros: roomier. ground is your insulation. Cons: Puddles, sticks, rocks, water, heavier, bulkier
Hammocks pros: camp virtually fucking anywhere, excellent stealth setup, leave no trace. Lightweight, versatile. Cons: cold weather, having to buy accessories for colder weather, only holds 1 person, 2 maybe.

Dakota fire holes are the shit! They'll keep you warm, but since the fire is in a hole in the ground, not much light will be seen.

I wish me and my brother had that kind of relationship we've both tripped and partied before (me quite a bit harder than him) but it would still be kinda awkward

this is a hydration pack witch i'll be using on my day exploring,it has pockets and webbing to carry other stuff i'll need like my penny stove and lunch. and the back pack i got from ebay 20bucks + 12 shipping not bad its in perfect working order other than its a medium so i'll have ta rework it a little cuz i'm a big dude. i chose an external frame so i can easily ad stuff to it like my toiletry/first aid pack and mess kit pack.
With a backyard that overgrown, what need is there to go to a state park and camp?

MisterPink said: Stealth camping really isn't that difficult.
Have fun
Yea LNT is important for this kind of thing. Have fun and good luck haha I hope it works out for you and you get to take day hikes to get messed up/explore yourself. The GPS will be important if you do end up tripping and going on day trips as it will make it so you know you can get back to camp at night.
