cigars pwn cigarettes it seems
    #10939993 -

I smoked a cigar this morning...now I kinda see why I love blunts so much. in fact, I almost kinda feel somewhat like I smoked one. It was just a mango phillie too...so I still don't understand the mechanics, like if it's something in the wrappage or not (somebody help me out here?). not only is the buzz nicer, but I smoked a whole cigar and feel much less drained of energy than a cigarette would make me feel.

My neighbor quit smoking cigars either because he was starting to get throat cancer or didnt want to get it, so like cigarettes, i don't plan to go crazy with it cuz it's not the healthiest, but still...that was surprisingly nice. sigh, I wish I had some :happyweed:

Add a whole thermos of coffee to the mix, and FUCK YEA, I'm ready to have a heart attack! Somebody fry me up a steak!

I can smoke a cigar like a philly or a dutch, but honestly they are too harsh for me.

I dont even like smoking blunts too much, but ill some a joint all day, every day.

Try a black & mild with a wood tip, i love em.

But recently i have been getting rolling tobacco, and twisting my own cigs, they taste WAY better and they are cheaper.

yeah this mango phillie (my fav flavor for blunts as well so far)...was surprisingly non-harsh, way less harsh than cigs or rolled cigs...i thought i was gonna have a sore throat and be coughin it up but to my surprise, it was very smooth...i was able to take some really nice satisfying drags. Also I didn't have to smoke much at all to get that blunt like feel, but I was enjoying it so much I just smoked the whole thing.

For me, usually by the end of a cigarette, I am very not satisfied, still want another one, and when i do smoke another one, feel like total shit for doing so. I only was able to get 2 of these cigars for the whole day, so hopefully I'll save it for around lunch time, but i could ration it out if I had to. I feel pretty content for now, and it's been about an hour. Sigh, i guess i've become a smoker again, for now...too many thangs on my plate and no :happyweed: for a long time.

Anyways, somebody had said that phillie wrappers are just paper, I think...but why do they give such a pleasant feeling? I'm so nostalgic for a blunt

Try some premium handmades. They cost, and take some getting used to (like fine wine,) but once you develop a pallet you will never want to smoke a cigarette again.

*small edit
Hell yeah, i have a PHD.
You sound like your new to the habit so i will recommend some cheaper milder (flavor and impact) premium hand rolled cigars. Generally you work your way up to the really bold peppery cigars, or even the mild tasting cubans that will make you light headed and want to throw up.

My first cigars i really enjoyed were the lars tetans. They dont make them any more, however the same people took their concept and ran with it like the NE patriots. They created the Drew estate brands such as ACID cigars and Natural LTD. Here are links to the brands i recommend. you can order them in 5-packs usually for cheap. If you go to the store you will spend 8-12 $ for one when you can order 5 for $25ish usually.

here are the ACID's i recommend
Kuba Kuba, Def sea, or liquid.
ACID's are very unique cigars in that they are flavored, however what you need to know is that they are made from %100 fermented tobaccos. The flavors come from them being aged in special rooms that also have special herbs, and essential oils in them. The flavor gets absorbed by the cigars through the air, unlike say, cognac diped cigars.

Along those same likes is a cigar i still smoke today (same manufacturer) called the NATURAL LTD
I smoke the "pimp sitcks"
They are a figurado shape (like a huge blunt, narrow at both ends,) and leave a mild vanilla taste on your lips.
Its a very mature flavor- not sweet really.

Cigars have different sizes, hence the names within a specific brand. For most cigar lines different size cigars with the same name have way different body and flavor profiles. If you hear someone saying they only like smoking big cigars because they are bolder or whatever they are full of shit. I have some tiny romeo y julieta cubanos that go off in you mouth like a stick of dynamite. They make my experienced ass light headed.

Understanding sizes:
A small cigar is 4 inches long and has a ring gage (circumference) of about 48. This is represented as "4 x 48"
A huge cigar would be 7 inches with a 60 ring gage or "7x60"
I prefer curchill or toro sizes (sometime called double corona, or a name the manufacturer made up.)
These are usually 6 inches and around a 54 ring ("6x54") You pay a bit more for a larger amount of tobacco per cigar.

Here are some traditional cigars they you will love for a few $ per stick:
Indian Tabak reserve.
These are cigars i love, personally. This is the least ammount of money you can spend on a cigar
of this quality!

these
Perdomo Habano
cigars are for you if you feel like jumping into something bolder and more full flavored.
For the price they are super good. Lots of smoke, and they are well constructed always.
Go for the 5x54 Connecticut. I smoke these everyday almost and any variety is good in this line.
My friends are impressed by the attractive wrapper, and when i hand these out people think i
gave them a 15 $ cigar. I pay less than $7 a piece.

If you dont care what they cost and want a good first smoke that will get you attention at the cigar lounge or country club try these high priced milds:

AVO <- (this guy played piano for sinatra!)
Ashton

or the super high priced ($25, which is $12 to much for what you get according to my taste)
Zino platinum Scepters
(jay-z smokes these.)

Thats a good start for you, anyone really.

Theres a difference with cigars (vs cig's) in that when i smoked cig's 10 years or so, i basically only smoked Winston reds (hard pack only, lol.) With Cigars, i like to try new ones all the time and usually if i smoke two in a night i smoke two different.

Phillies are absolutely horrendous once you smoke real cigars. If you thought that thing tasted good wait until you have a real nice handmade dominican cigar.

If your into flavors go with the ACID or CAO Flavors route. However most true cigar smokers frown upon flavored cigars(I'm not one of them)

For a really good, really cheap smoke I would go with the Aruto Fuente Curlyhead. If you like strong cigars choose the maduro wrapper, and choose natural for a more mild smoke.

There are a couple things here i will comment on. The flavored cigars like Lars Titans (basically same as ACID) were a great transition cigar for me. I smoked swishers occasionally and these novelty cigars were a great starting point for my novice entry in to the heavenly word of fine tobacco. I mentioned earlier ACID's being 100% fermented tobaccos- i said this because phillies, swishers etc. are about 20-40% tobacco and the rest is paper. There is also a ton of shit they add to flavor them, which is horrible for you.

Sure some elite cigar guys will still bad mouth ACID's (your right,) but the truth is they are an UNDENIABLE phenomenon that has so much popularity now that they make up their own market. There will be more flavored cigar brands in the future, and still be a huge amount of people who smoke them. They dont have shit on some $25 USD hand rolled Cubans IMO , but for 4 or 5 $ they are nice and enjoyable.

You made a common mistake in your post tho: All Maduro's are not strong. This is an important piece of information, because there are tons of mild maduro smokes. A "single" maduro cigar has only one maduro leaf wrapping it and often has light fillers and binders underneath. It can be said that maduro's are GENERALLY stronger and more favorable.

Quote:
Now here is where things get a little confusing: The term "Maduro" can be used to describe solely the color of a wrapper, or it can be used to actually refer to the process of creating a Maduro wrapper leaf. In short, a cigar can be Maduro in color, but not actually a Maduro wrapper and vice versa, while a wrapper can be fermented using the methods that create natural Maduro wrappers, but the resulting color may be on the lighter end of the Maduro color spectrum.

Source.
Click the link if you want to dedicate about 10 minutes to your knowledge of the cigar tobacco.
It's a good read.

Fuente's are a great brand in terms of their production and quality control (ie. not alot of flaws, viens in the wrapper etc.) I never tried the one you mentioned, but i will have to pick one up now:thumbup:

Maybe you could write me a review for it?

I want to brag now;
The MR. Rockey Patel, the best domestic cigar manufacturer and hardest working man in the biz, recently invited me to his plantation/mansion in Honduras! When the political climate calms down a bit i will be spending a weekend getting wined and dined there :awesham:

The bad part is a couple months ago there was a military cupe de etat that overthrew their democratically elected president. The US gov. has threatened retaliation, making Honduras a bad vacation spot right now. It will all blow over soon tho, and fuck it, i didn't have a problem in Cuba :gethigh:

Heres a great site to order cubans to the US http://www.topcubans.com/
Don't get confused tho- many cuban manufacturers have the same names as cigars you can buy in the US legally (such as cohiba and montecristo) however the legal ones ARE NOT MADE IN CUBA.

Yeah I'm aware of the whole maduro thing I just didn't want to waste time writing an in depth post when theres hundreds of better written and more informative ones out there that are just a google search away. I just wanted to make the point that in general, darker leaf = stronger smoke, but there are obviously many more factors involved than just the wrapper. And I am also a big Acid fan, as well as CAO Flavors. Try a Moontrance if you get the chance, AMAZING!

And as far as the curlyhead, its a great, great cigar for the $1-3 it costs. However, it is definitely a beginner cigar and if you have more experience in cigar smoking there are definitely better options out there for you.

I should note that there is a Curlyhead and Curlyhead Deluxe. Don't be fooled by the "Deluxe". They are two totally separate cigars and the Deluxe is not as good as the original.

To the OP: Ashton, Perdomo, Rockey Patel, Fuente, Romeo y Julieta are all good, reputable manufacturers worth checking out.

so what's the best for rolling a premium blunt? and why does even a phillie give a nice blunt-like feel (as far as not using marijuana goes)?  I'm just trying to understand thangs...i though somebody said phillies didn't actually use a tobacco leaf, just paper.

True, i gave that site because the cubans you can get from Geneva (ironically the Cuban cigar capitol of the world) are cheaper than those from Canada alot of times. I really feel like nothing will ever beat my favorite cigar: the Cuban, Cohiba siglo VI $750 USD a box (25 cigars or $30 per stick) imported, or about $400 Canadian on the isle of Cuba.

For a blunt? I think you mean like rolling weed in.. Its better to roll blunts with the paper mixed tobaccos like zigzag blunts, phillies, etc. They come flavored to go well with chronic and pure fermented tobacco leaves are way to harsh to smoke then hold in your lungs with some pot smoke. You will cough that shit out instantly unless your way hardcore. I rolled a blunt for a Willy Nelson concert a few months ago with a page from my LSAT study book, i have 100 cigars on hand, and no real blunt wraps. I figured straight paper would be better.

Smoking weed with willy was a life goal

Here are a few handmade cigars I would recommend for a beginner.  After you smoke these you will probably never want to smoke a machine made cigar again.

-Perdomo Reserve Champagne:  These are a good mild cigar that do not lack flavor like some mild cigars do.  They are a bit expensive though.

-Flor de Oliva/ Flor de Oliva Gold:  These are excellent bundle cigars (cheaper cigars packaged in cellophane bundles.)  The Golds are a bit milder.  I would recommend starting with these.

-5 Vegas/ 5 Vegas Gold:  Again, the gold brand is milder.  These are both worth trying.

-Padron: If you want something with a little more flavor and body try these.  Almost all Padrons are excellent cigars.  Try the milder cigars first though to get a feel for your tastes.

-Other brands:  I would recommend trying cigars from Fuente, Oliva, Don Pepin Garcia, Litto Gomez, Tatuaje, La Flor Dominicana and Illusione.  Many of these are very full flavored and full bodied however, so I suggest trying some of the milder cigars first to avoid being overwhelmed.

These are two of my favorite online cigar retailers, you will usually be able to find much better prices online than in a brick and mortar store.

When i order (as opposed to wasting $ at the stores with their %50 markup) im almost exclusively a CI guy. Cigars international is the best in the business. I've been featured on their site (not to get to specific and reveal my identity.) The one and only problem i have with them really is that they DO NOT carry the flor de Oliva Gold. They have the full strength for sale, but they smell like wet horses in a pile of old boots. Im lucky enough to have a JR outlet nearby that stocks them for near internet pricing. I wouldnt pay more than $60 for the bundle, 40-50 is about right.

The flor de oliva gold is exceptional, but telling a beginner to buy a bundle, of which he will prolly take a month to finish would first require me recommending not using my favorite site (Cigars international,) then i would have to tell him they probably wont stay in good shape (humid) unless he shells out some dough for a humidor and hu. device and hygrometer (ok...he might already have a hygrometer, lol.) Thats why i didn't include this gem earlier, but believe me, it is the first cigar i would bust out if he was in my place right now for a smoke.

Im solidly impressed with your taste in a lot of ways. Now let me criticize it.
First off, padron cigars, are like olives either you like them or you dont. I've tried a handful and none of them did it for my pallet, however i couldn't outright say they were bad cigars. Padron smokers are there own kind IME, i dont share similar preference with them normally. It's weird, i know.

Recommending anything from OLIVA is dangerous, they have some HUGE bombs on the market right now. I dont know why people like them *ack* like i mentioned earlier the flor de oliva is wretched. NUB cigars are made by oliva and i really dont enjoy them. Its an odd experience and more attention was paid to the marketing and design than the flavor profile. I aged one for 6 months to see if it got better- it tasted worse than the first one.

In oliva's signature line there are some good smokes, but the flavor profiles vary wildly between sizes. They cost alot more than the flor de oliva gold, yet taste pretty much the same  (serie V that is.) I did not like the g or v maduros i got in a sampler. only tried one size, then smoked another different V and enjoyed it. Too much guessing.

Don peppin is awesome, i currently have a box of his Cuban classics. I really dont like them after the half way point tho, the flavor changes and becomes musty for lack of a better term. They are so strong after a long stay in my humidor that i never wanted to finish one anyway. They are BOLD.

You may not have known that Don Peppin Garcia blended the Tatuaje brand! (tatoo in spanish-wierd name ehh?)
He's a genius. Tatuaje is probably the best premium boutique cigar out today. The factory is in Miami and theres only about 12 hand rollers that make every tatuaje, and you can tell they have experience. Ive smoked every blend in this line just about. The brown wrapper 6.5 x 50 (aproximate) has everything i like about the don p. cuban classic but it never gets bad. It is truly awesome.

The brown wrapper series rates higher in my book than the havana VI series (red banding) but they are both top cigars in the craft. Good luck finding them tho, the websites that carry  them are rarely in stock and the shelves of the best tobacco stores are unable to keep a full selection either. They are hella expensive also, but ahh so worth it.

Good point about the Olivas.  I also did not enjoy the Nub line.  To be more specific I would strongly recommend the Oliva V and any of the Oliva Master Blends.  As far as the bundles go, Famous Smoke often sells singles and 5 packs of bundle cigars.  Also, glass or acrylic humidors can be had for very little money.  Throw in a Humidipak and they are a perfectly good way to store cigars.

I also thoroughly enjoy the Pepin Cuban Classics.  I got a really good deal on 20 of the robustos several months ago.  The Tatuaje's are great too.  You said you have gotten your hands on a variety of them, have you tried the Black?  There were singles of these at a cigar shop near me but I just couldn't bring myself to spend $18 on one.

I think you are right about the Padrons.  People either like them or they don't.  Personally, I have never had a Padron that I didn't like.  I was a little disappointed in the anniversary line though, due to the high price.  I think the thousand series are a better deal.  If I am going to spend that much on a cigar its either going to be cuban or its going to be an Opus X (my favorite non cuban.)

It is a preference thing at the beginning, but now that im only on cigars i have no desire for cig smoke in my lungs. When i was smoking cig's i still liked cigars- thats the difference.

hmm...that's strange...the cigar i was puffin on today, I was able to inhale big huge drags, very smoothly, and pleasantly exhale big clouds of smoke...it was a far better experience than smoking a cigarette...when I smoked a cigarette later, various types, you can hardly pull in much smoke, and when you do, it burns your throat...im sure there are some extremely harsh cigars out there, but this definitely pwned cigarettes

One thing i like to remember that the key to really enjoying the complexity of a cigar is the one puff a minute rule. Smoking it to fast toasts the tobaccos in front of the cherry before they burn causing a pretty standard burnt taste.

Another good point is how long you should smoke a cigar. When you are done enjoying it, put it down. It might be 20 min of 2 hours depending on many things. That is the nature of the enjoyment.

Im dying to quantifiabley prove this, so dont repeat it as fact, but i heard that the "special" feeling you get from some cuban cigars (think montecristo #2; the Earths most popular cigar) is from a high lithium content in the soil.
The same lithium that is administered as an antipsychotic in hospitals. I always knew there was something a little xtra in my cubans. It sure makes alot of sense.

Just thought i would throw that in here.

cigars are excellent one in a while, but i dislike how strong of a smell they leave on you afterwards

I wouldn't be opposed to a nice quality cigar, I just don't know where to find them.

a lot of liquor stores have a humidor now, any tobacco shop will have a great selection and usually someone knowledgeable about cigars, enough so to help you find something enjoyable for beginning smokers

that being said...

If any of you cigar fans want to listen to some right-wind-cigar-hilarity clicky.
I've been a fan of this show for years
I will admit it is a guilty pleasure- it can be pretty far out there to the right; yet dave seems to have a ron paul esque approach to the "pleasure police," and he sounds Damn liberal about %4-%8 of the time.
