Trial and error is the way nearly all real world equations are solved.   Exactly solvable equations are canned constructs made up for introductory students.  Equations that govern things in the real world are, nearly always, unsolvable.  We use trial and error to get useful approximations.

Yeah by making imaginary numbers.

Nope, imaginary numbers aren't inherently involved. You just want to find the instantaneous rate of change; the rate of change over a given interval (we'll call the interval h) is given by the formula:

Rate of Change = [F(x)+F(x+h)] / h

To find the instantaneous rate of change, we essentially want to find the solution when h=0. Since we obviously can't do that, we simply take the limit of the above formula as h approaches infinitessimally close to zero. That is,

Nothing imaginary involved, unless the function that you're finding the rate of change for includes complex terms.

I like math.  I'm not wild about it but I've got an interest in it.

Dangerous Knowledge^^^^ is a pretty cool BBC special I watched once.

I'm also trying to read this book about prime numbers and the Reinmann Hypothesis.  Now THAT's some far out stuff.

Oh, and also....trial and error has got nothing on math.  There's no way we'd be where we are today without math.  IMO, you're misunderstanding the mathematical nature of the internet/engines/cities/everything if you think that trial and error would of gotten us this far.

I saw that documentary special a couple times - its good.  I like it because it mixes the history, the psyche and the mathematics.  I just watched it again last week as a matter of fact.
