I used 4 qts rye grain to straw/worm castings and horse poo in a 37 gal tub.  Im using z strain by the way

Four days ago.  I can see some very small areas for growth around a few rye seeds.  I pulled off the plastic I had on top of the substrate to encourage evaporation.

leave it on the water will condense on the cover and you can take it off just to let the water drain of somewere other than back on the sub, but then cover. till it is colonized you are asking for contams

The lid to the tub was still on while the plastic was off

well that's not going to help unless there is holes in the lid o it can breath and as long as it condenses on the top like it will just let it drip some were other than the sub
