Getting into shape?

Well here's the deal - I leave for basic training in ~5 months. I'm a bit underweight, never been to a gym in my life, and have never really exercised. So my goal is to pack on some pounds before I go in, and be able to run all day every day, up hill both ways in the snow. I'm not really concerned with "big muscles" or anything like that, I just want to be able to run.. a lot, without getting tired. Any advice on how I should start out?

cardio will not pack on the pounds as he's asking for.
head over to bodybuilding.com and pick out a good beginners full body routine, don't worry about splits yet because they aren't even necessary for your level of fitness. work on strength one day, cardio the next and alternate 4-5 times a week. eat lots of healthy protein and get your efa's and you should be gaining weight in no time.

I was under the impression that protein wouldn't do me any good, calories are what I need.

Protein is key to building muscle, and if you want to both get bigger and be able to run far i'd combine the two above suggestions

Job every day a couple times for like 25 minutes. Eat healthier Stretch a few times everyday And....yeah just do that and you will be good to go.

150 pushups, good lord.
But yeah I'm not looking for anything too excruciating, I'm not too out of shape but gaining weight is going to be the hardest part.

if he has never worked out. there is no way he can do 150 push ups a night.
dont focus on numbers. just drop down to the floor and pump out as many as you can. im talking about until you try to push that last one up, and you just collapse. then wait a couple minutes and do it again. do this about every other day. cause if you do it every day, you arent giving your muscle fibers time to rebuild. on the days your aren't doing pushups, run.
once you get to the point where you can do a shitload of pushups without getting that tired. fill a backpack with books, put it on, and pump out a bunch more push ups.
pushups are the utimate upper body workout. they build both strength and endurance. its alot like benchpressing about 2/3 of your body weight.

150 pushups will do nothing but destroy your joints if you have no exercise experience, do not listen to such a thing. I am in pretty damn good shape and i would say 50 pushups is my absolute max i could do in one go. you don't want to get huge and bulky for basic, which is why i wouldn't recommend a sole weight training routine, however if you were to bulk for 2 months then cut for 2 months then have 1 month maintenance with good split workouts and cardio alternating i would say you would have a good chance at begin healthier and a lot stronger.
like i said, simply search the bodybuilding.com for good beginner routines, and work from there. don't get discouraged when you start to plateau because your first gains are definitely the easiest.

I disagree. Not only are pushups a waste of time they will not put any size on you. He needs to gain weight. Doing pushups makes you better at doing pushups.
Go to a gym and lift a barbell.

Space em out? lol I am sorry, ive been working out in school for sports and shit since I was 13 :/
Umm, you could just go jogging. A lot, maybe when you walk around try and walk a little faster with more force in your step, this will definitely make a difference.
Do calisthenic excersizes on a hill...not too much of an incline, but a hill will help a lot in getting in shape, obviously because of the added effort that is needed. It will also make you more agile and quick.

You have to do the push ups in increments.

and remember there are many different pushup positions. and each position focuses on a certain muscle. im not exactly sure which position helps which, thats why i do a bunch of different variation.
im pretty fit. 5,8 145 pretty much all muscle, except for a little extra flab in the legs because i dont run. and i never use weights except for dumbells every once in a while for biceps. but even for biceps, i mainly use a pullup bar.

Yeah, I wasn't saying to do them all at once.
I usually do sets of 25 situps, 25 pushups. Wait a few minutes, catch my breath, and do another 25-25 until I have 150 done.
But you guys are right that many pushups and situps are only going to destroy, instead of strenghthen, if you don't have any history of working out.

What advice do you guys have for gaining weight? I'm under the impression you can't gain muscle* if you don't have any meat to put the muscle on I honestly need to gain about 30-40 pounds.

bullshit. if you read my whole post. you will understand. the regular pushups will just get him in shape. then you start adding weights, just like you would if you were benching.
