a step for Zeitgeist. The 4th Branch of government
    #10912974 - 08/22/09 02:55 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Currently there is a poorly defined 4th branch to the United States government- Which is said is the 'people' and the 'media'. This is of course without any real structure or grasp in the day-to-day workings of the US Government. The media is controlled by large US corporations and takes a lot of their cues from the executive branch of government. The media is handed bits and pieces from the executive branch during little meetings, and it doesn't seem like enough. The people are fed just enough information on where the U.S really wants to go, and just enough information on issues concerning everyones lives. Its hard to articulate the strangleation i feel from the current structure of government, and current structure of information we have in the United States- Where elected few are corrupted by corporations, and seem to be led to believe that this is the way the world gets run. Where we the people are informed last, after the ideas and arguments have been made behind their closed doors, and the decision to war, to corrupt, and to sacrifice the faceless peoples of other nations has already been made.

What I propose is to add this 4th Branch of government structurally to our Constitution, and make it a reality. A new Branch to work in Washington along side the other three. This branch, in a sense of how I see it, could be considered an investigative, or reportive branch of government. Whose purpose is to report on the other branches, to attend with congress people in their conversations, to hear the ideas and talk that gets muted for the public. This branch doesnt have to wait for the white house to hold one of their conferences- they would have the power to listen to most of what goes on behind the closed doors. So when some congress person takes a private jet with the CEO of exoon mobil, some of the people from this new 4th branch will be there too.

Obviously this is just an idea in its infancy. But i see this branch as needing much oversight. I see this branch creating reports and speaking on whats happening in Washington much better than the current media can. This branch could create public weekly reports, even have its own government funded television channels which can be free for everyone.

I see this branch as accomplishing much for the United States, and the planet as a whole. I feel it would a large step in the right direction for the zeitgeist movement, and would no longer allow the United States to fuel war and create scarcity, but would force the public, the government officials- all of us- to start playing by some rules.

No, the "4th branch" would be the federal reserve.

News = profits, nothing more, nothing less. They are companies in it to make money and advance their own agenda.

Besides, things are kept from the public for a reason.

That's just about the most illogical proposition I've ever heard.

The federal reserve isn't a branch of government.

I understand certain things would be reported on, such as current war stategies or the sort, but i think this would like help to eliminate special interest groups and lobbyists and all that shit.

SO u say that news is for the companies who want the profit?

Ah, yea, look who owns them. It isn't rocket science. Why do they advertise? Why do they pitch bumper stickers and such, sign up for this "extra" content? Its all about Ca$h Money! Thats why every night Bill ORielly strokes himself about how great his book is. Everyone has an agenda, don't be so naive.

And no, interest groups and lobbyist are not a bad thing (granted I'm not a huge fan of them, but I recognize their importance to a democracy)

Have you not read the Federalist Papers?

No shit, but they operate independently and make important decisions. Hence quotes.

Gee, and here I thought your quotation marks were meant to imply that you were quoting his previous statement. "My mistake" for not understanding your vague intention of sarcasm.

I don't believe its a fourth branch, just merely get sick of these crackpot idea threads recycled from corporate media/conspiracy theories.

Everybody knows the 4th branch is

Ok, sorry for the delay on a response.

I don't think you guys are looking at what I'm suggesting in the right way. Im just asking if you think the idea is good or could be made good, not whether you think the church or the federal reserve serve as a type of forth branch. Or whether you think that the powers that be in the money hungry media and such would allow the proposed changes to our government.

I agree that some things the public should not be informed about- as I said, ongoings of war or things of national security.

I think that creating a structured branch that can allow for more public investigation into current affairs in Washington would allow for less lies and more accurate factual information being generated and debated.
